I’ve been an atheist my entire life as were my parents.
I used to think there was something wrong with me that I couldn't 'get' this imaginary monster caller 'god'.
There must be millions of people faking belief in ‘god’ cos there’s no way you could really believe in such a monster as the concept has no evidence to support it.
It's nice to know I'm a member of a select group of rationalists.

I too wonder how you can 'make' yourself believe something that has absolutely NO evidence to support it.
I see that as impossible as telling myself that it's dark outside when I KNOW it's 9 am and sunny.

I vote for Oliver S's answer even though he's a Kiwi and I’m in Oz.

Pascal's wager, yawn... *chug a cup of grog*

How many Gods do you want to apply that to - yours may not be the right one.

Is there even a shred of evidence?

It's safer to not enforce your morality on others, and more healthy for society.

Dear Pirate,
Try coffee. It will help some in your comprehension. Liquor from the beginning of the day. Not very helpful.
Coffee with rum is another option. You will still get the buzz from the rum, and the coffee.

sorry, Talk Like a Pirate day is over now. :D
(I'm in NZ - different timezone)

in answer to your question:

No,it is not safer to believe.

Pascals wager (as your question is otherwise known) is monumentally flawed.

The most obvious reasons are:

1) which god to believe in? there are thousands of god concepts at the moment (and infinite more as yet undreamed of). If you get the wrong one then whoops!

2) what if the real god is one who only rewards people who don't believe in him, and sends all believers to hell?

3) you cannot choose to believe something. either the evidence makes sense to you or it doesn't.

4) what sort of god rewards people who only beleive in him out of fear of hell? sounds like the kind of god who would probably send everyone to hell anyway just for kicks.

I always thought that Pascal's wager was a wussy cop-out. God gave me this brain to think with. If it turns out that by thinking, I lost faith in him, well, I hope he understands that I couldn't do it any other way.
