I found out yesterday that I am being laid off. Although I was shocked, it is no surprise that the company has not been doing well. They have been having a hard time retaining clients and then the owner decided that she wanted to take the company in a diffrent direction. Anyway, the would like for me to stay on until the end of this month and they don't mind if I utilize my working hours to seek employment. They offered me three week severance pay and three weeks medical.

Is this a good deal. I've never been fired or laid off before, so I'm not sure what I should expect.

I have been with the company for 1 year.

I've also discovered that half the office has been laid off as well. And the company's owner has not been in the office since the "laying off" took place which is cowardly on her part.

Depends on how you define "a good deal." It may take you more than three weeks to find employment and it depends on how your contract was written as to whether you were entitled to a higher severance pay.

For now, I would consider this as a decent opportunity because you can use as much of your working hours as possible to seek employment. Of course, maintain a decent relationship and do any work that they ask for you to complete. In that way, your current employer will be more helpful should a potential employer call for a reference.

At the least, your remaining time should be enough for you to seek out a temporary job. You can accept that offer and consider any better offers as they arise.

♥ Well it depends on just how long have you been working there? My company is closing down September 30 as well... The severance that they offered here is 4 weeks to every 1 year that they were working here and 6 months meidcal insurance. And because they are staying until November 30 to do filing, cleaning, moving, etc they are getting 2 months bonus pay as well. Me on the other hand started this company January 5, 2007 [[through a Temp agency]]. I was supposed to become permanent, but because they brought another company and decided to move I'm still temporary. Plus I leave at the end of this month, so now I'm outta a job next Fri and havent found another job.... *sigh*. If you've been working there for a long time I'd rethink that whole severance thing... good Luck!

The end of this month is only 4 more days. What other choice do you have? Be sure to file for unemployment as SOON as you are laid off. Some states require you to wait until the severance and medical pay stops before you can start collecting, other states allow you to start right away.

Go to the Unemployment Office in your town to file.

Hell no. If you are getting laid off, file for unemployment. They have to pay that for a good long time. Don't accept that pittance the company is offering to you. It won't last any more than the three weeks it is supposed to be good for.

Well you are no longer a virgin... :) in the employment world. That is a very good deal compared to what is standard. Just start looking for another job while doing what they need you to do where you are at. And thank them for allowing you to look for another job during your working hours.

It is a good deal for the laying off package. Most of people did not get good luck like you.
