"Perfect happiness, I believe, was never intended by the Deity to be the lot of any one of His creatures in this world. The most fortunate of us frequently meet with calamities which may greatly afflict us, and to fortify our minds against the attack of these misfortunes should be one of the principal studies and endeavors of our lives."

The reason I ask is because it is my understanding that the LDS believe happiness is achievable in this life. Is it? Or is my perception of Mormonism in regard to happiness wrong?

I agree with it wholeheartedly, me matey. While happiness IS achievable during this lifetime and is something we should each strive for, "PERFECT HAPPINESS" is only achievable in a perfect place, a place without sorrow (i.e. heaven). That's what this quote is driving at. It is pointing to the fact that this world is not perfect and that more often than not we will be faced with trials that will test us and help us to learn and grow.

That be my opinion, me matey.

EDIT FOR SPLEENWATER: You're thinking of the "FLDS" church, which is the polygamous splinter group. "LDS" does indeed refer to the "Mormon church" and stands for "Latter-Day Saints"....me matey!

Happiness is achievable in mortality by living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That does not mean that we will not continue to be tempted, tested, and undergo infirmities and calamities in life.

This second estate is a proving ground--a test to see if we will, through our agency, select the righteous course to return to the Father's presence. Happiness comes through obedience to the laws and commandments of God.

Note: As Betafish so attests, Spleenwater is confused on what an LDS is. It is short for a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Those fundamentalists claiming to follow part of the doctrines of this Church are not LDS any more than a Baptist is.

Perfect Happiness is not the duality of happy and sad. This human concept of happiness means that if you seek for happy you will find a temporary happy, and when it subsides, Guess what comes next!

The Plan of Salvation is also called the Plan of Happiness. We know happiness in mortality, BECAUSE we also experience sorrow. We have a higher degree of satisfaction when we work harder, study harder or pray harder.

Mormons follow a false Jesus. Their Jesus is Satans brother which makes Satan their uncle if Jesus is the everlasting Father> (must be fun at family reunions) And they believe that God was once a man and they can become Gods too. IF God was once a man he was once a sinner. My God never sinned and died for my sins. You want a counterfeit Jesus? or an imperfect God? Be a Mormon. Then you can believe your a good person. Joseph Smith was proven wrong on many prophecies and should not be taken serious. Gordon Hinkley is the seer and wears glasses? Mormons are building Mosque's for Muslims and that's interesting. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DANGEROUS CULT.

remember the LDS is not synonymous with Mormonism. the LDS is a splinter group that embraces polygamy, and have been excommunicated by the Mormon Church because of their views on polygamy.
