a. Ships are important for the transportation of durable goods. In todays global economy, the majority of our oils, electronics, clothing, and appliances come from overseas. If shipping were halted, or even slowed down, there would be serious ramifications on our economy. These include greatly increased prices and non-availability of some items.

Train
Trains serve the same purpose as ships, just on a smaller scale and over land. Trucks could potentially take the place of trains, but prices would reflect due to the increased costs. Also, there would be more trucks on the roads, causing an increase in traffic.

Airplanes are useful for transporting people, time sensitive items, and delicate items. Costs associated with transport by air are significantly hugher costs.
