Why are Muslim men allowed to have up to 4 wives?

If he thinks that short term marriages are allowed, he must be a Shia. Muslims are divided into Sunni and Shia. I don't know what's exactly the difference between them but i know Shias allow short term marriages for men. Yes, Muslim men are allowed to have upto 4 wives. Whether they need to inform or ask their present wife's permission, that is debated among them and as far as i know, not all Muslims hold same opinion about it. Some believe a man can marry another woman without asking his wife's permission. Some believe polygamy was a necessity of past due to wars, and shouldn't be practiced now. Also, there is a marriage contract so the woman can mention it beforehand on the contract that she isn't okay with polygamy.

2. They can only if the first wife gives permission... (actually in Iran they just passed a law that not only the wife has to give permission for second wife, but also a judge has to evaluate to see if he's fit to have a second wife... financially n other stuff)...

3. The reason men can and women can't... is that its obvious the child belongs to which mother if the man has multiple wives... but when a woman has multiple husbands... then it would be hard to figure out who was the father...

4. Back then... there were a lot of widows due to wars n stuff... lots of women were without any support... so as a solution... other men took care of them... but to make it look legit... they had to marry them... otherwise ppl would start talking... etc....

Men are naturally polgyamous in nature so it makes sense for them to have more then one wife. Women are more then men in all the world so if one man was to marry just one woman then that would leave 1billion women who were single and without protection. What is better for women being the second or third or 4th wife and knowing that they don't have to suffer and that their husband will support them and provide for them until he dies or being public property, sleeping with strange men and being miserable by having to work all day? A woman can not have more then one husband because a woman can only be preganant once a year and would have to get DNA tests with all the husbands to figure out who the father is. A man can get more then one woman pregnant at a time and you know who the parents are. Having more then one wife is an option. A man can take more then one wife if his first wife agrees to it and he can treat them all equally and fairly. Most Muslim men even rich Muslim men only have one wife. If a Muslim man has more then one wife then at most he has two wives. If his first wife doesn't give permission for him to marry again then he can't take a second wife.
Reasons a Muslim man might take a second wife:
1) the first wife is infertile and can't have kids so instead of divorcing her the first wife gives her permission for him to marry a second wife so he can have children.
2) the first wife is old and can't take care of the house or children so he marries a second wife to help the first wife out and have more children.
3) the first wife is sick and/or in the hospital for a long time and can't satisfy his sexual needs and desires so he takes a second wife to be sexually satisfied.
Conditons that must be met in order to take a second wife:
1) Husband must have first wife's permssion in order to take a second wife otherwise he can't get married
2)Husband must be able to provide for all his wives(if he buys something for one wife he has to buy something for his other wives)
3) Husband must treat them all equally and fairly(he can't favor one wife over the others and can't neglect the other wives)

The practice stems from a time hen most women did not provide for themselves. If they were widowed, they were basically screwed.
Polygamy was a way to ensure women being "taken care of" in a society that frowns on extramarital relations, and especially in times of war had a "surplus" of females. Mind you , one was only allowed to take several wives if one could provide for them equally.

Now of course the practice sometimes still exists out of social context.

To keep the females from danger, they must either be under the protection of some male or be taught to protect themselves. Guess which way the males chose?

this is interesting. for your knowledge, islam promotes men with single wife. however, if the men can support more and gives the equal happiness to the wife, he can add until four.

However, it is normal that men keeps only one wife as more wife means you need to give them more clothing, more shelter, and anything equally.

Up to 4 wives can allow a woman who really need support from a husband. it is not only for happiness but to help them out of prostitution threat or other bad things.
