Because it makes for good debate : the question of religion also includes those who don't believe and their reasons for it. They can be equally passionate in their opinions as those who do believe.

It is only natural to think why atheists should be "interested" in religion. Let me give you another perspective.

As a Christian I believe God could have destroyed Satan the moment he rebelled. It certainly would have spared us all the troubles that we have to go through. Ironically, this is what makes a lot of people atheists. They cannot imagine how a God who is supposed to be all-powerful allow so much of evil to exist and still apparently do nothing about it.

Sometimes the rightness or wrongness of an idea is not apparent at the outset. Only later on does it become obvious. Take for example various laws. No sooner than a law is passed, its deficiency becomes apparent and another law or exception to it is passed. It's the same with Satan's ideas. God had to allow him to work on his ideas for all to see what they were. And by the look of it still some people don't get it. Of course, God will not allow this go on forever but He has allotted a specific amount of time, known only to Him, for all the questions to be brought out in the open so that as many as possible can make a decision one way or another. To this end this section is doing a great job.

Well, I'll try not to be abusive, but you really should do a search first before asking a question like this, because it gets asked every single day.

First of all, have you noticed that a lot of the questions are directed at atheists? Who better to answer them?

Second, you're assuming that atheists have no interest in religion and spirituality. Buddhism has no god, and Buddhists are what you'd probably consider religious, correct?

Also, speaking as an agnostic leaning toward atheist, religion fascinates me. I find it interesting the things people can make themselves believe, and the many ways in which people throughout the centuries have come up with to believe those things.

And finally, as you'll see in this very thread -- and I guarantee you will -- atheists have to come here to set the record straight about themselves, because religious people invariably try to misrepresent what atheists believe.

I am not an Atheist, but I think they have every right to dispute the existence of God.

Discussions on religion and spirituality should welcome challenges to belief, since everyone who believes surely wants to be certain that what they believe is valid.

If a person does not want to hear many sides of an issue, I would advise them to avoid a public forum like this. To me it's just the very nature of discussion to have both sides speak up. In fact, sometimes I wonder why people who attend church don't ask questions. Surely they don't believe that everything the preacher tells them is true.

the problem is that even as atheists our everyday lives are effected by decisions made on outmoded and nonsensical ideas written down some 2000 odd years ago by people who lacked our knowledge of the universe, the earth and life on it and who's motives for writing such stuff is to say the least questionable. So of course while helping people on here by answering questions if we can we also like to try and combat the undue influence religions have on our lives.

Actually we are not. I just read your question but the catagory I always stay in is all catagories. Your question came up so I answered.

I would bet most of us that do not believe in god and religion are doing the same and are not just looking for religious questions to answer. I answer one from your catagory about one or two a week as they come up from time to tinme. Many I see I do not answer.

Because there are a lot of atheists who are spiritual, a lot of atheists who like discussing these topics and debating/putting forward their own point of view, and a lot of atheists who just come here for fun because some pretty interesting stuff gets posted on here.

I happen to be all of the above. lol. =D

Since you ONLY mention atheists, and NOT other religions, could it be that you are SOOO interested in becoming Buddhist,Muslim,Hindu,Pagan,
deist, pantheist? This is NOT,after all,"the CHRISTIAN"section.I have an interest, especially in Christianity,as Christians constantly try to enforce their religion through legislation.I also watch ball games, maybe I shouldn't,since I am not a player?Think about your question,in it,you are between the lines admitting you are "SOO interested" in these other religions.Do you think Jesus would like that?

Good question! It just shows that both atheists and religious people share the common human condition of needing to find meaning in their lives. Atheists don't believe God provides the meaning, but they can't live with the idea that there IS no meaning. Existential philosophers argue that our lives are meaningless and that we cannot cope with this idea and we need to make a meaning for ourselves.
I think of myself as spiritually aware.

Let's make a deal: You promise me that nobody ever gets hurt by your religion again, and I'll never discuss it again.

In the meantime, more americans are killed every year by christian opposition to medical progress than by terrorists.

Read Letter to a Christian Nation if you want to understand how harmful your religion is.
