Your boss sounds like an insensitive twit. I don't think they'll fire you for taking care of your sick baby. When you return to work, apologize for missing work, but let them know that your child's health is more important than your job. If they do fire you, you should have no problem drawing unemployment.
You can also do what I've done before. Take the sick kid to work with you. Be sure to let them know that the child has a high fever, no day care will keep her, and you were afraid they would fire you if you didn't show up. Best if the child is wailing away when you walk in. When they ask if she's contagious, cough on them and say "I think so". They'll be begging you to take some time off, dear.
Edit: Family and Medical Leave Act ( FMLA) is law, and doesn't need "approval" by the employer.

At this point, your baby is the most important. I do not believe they are able to fire you for this especially if you have a doctor's note. For the future, I would try to have a person that could take care of your little one at a moment's notice so you don't have to miss work. That being said, I think it is time to change jobs. Your boss and bigger boss don't seem very family friendly. Of course, you probably need to keep your job for the time being, but I would definitely start being very proactive and send out some resumes and actively pursue another place of employment. BTW, I hope your little girl is feeling better soon.

If your job has a sick day policy..or even a plan for emergency abscences..than this would most certainly qualify. You need to talk to the person who handles personell. To my knowledge it is illegal to fire someone for missing work due to illness or emergency. Now if this is something that has happened repeatedly, the company may have the right to terminate you...it would depend on the policy. My suggestion is to look up labor laws for your state..there will be varying ones depending on the size of the company..concerning sick days and illness. Call back your employer, let them know you are taking the baby to the doctor, that you will gladly provide them with a note from there to back up what you were saying and that you will be back tomorrow. Go home and do the research, come up with a plan to have the baby taken care of if needed for tomoroow and then go back in. Bring any proof and/or copies of any of the information you have found with them and then ask to see a copy of the businesses policy on abscences. Be sure you get a copy for yourself. If they continue to threaten you with termination, immediately contact legal aide for more information and assitance.

Are you a union member? Are you a physician that has morning patients? Are you a critical essential for your workplace? The company should manage to always have a backup!Although, you have some low integrity workers that habitually lie on their kids making it bad for legitimate cases like yours.
During your feedbacks with your supervisor were the duty hours, sick leave, emergencies discussed and what to do in the situation. If the 'boss' threatens to fire you on an one or rare incident that is grounds for a grievance. Go to HR SOON to prepare for future handling of this type of situations.
Certain bosses seem to deliberately make it hard for you and make you feel more like crap than you already feel when your family member is sick! Hope your child gets better.

you have been there for long enough for the family and medical leave act to be in play here. make sure to have a drs note for you boss saying that your child should not have been in child care that day. Then if they fire you you will be able to collect unemployment because you have proof that you were with your child at the dr. becasue she was sick. It is the same situation if you woke up sick and called off for the day because you have the flu or something.

This could qualify as FMLA Family leave medical act. Make sure you get some documentation from the Dr for when you go back to work. There are places you can contact and this could be a law suit especially if you can show proof that the kid was sick.

Take care of your baby and yourself. You are protected by law and as you stated you don't abuse your time off.Maybe you could call your boss and see if there is anything you can do from home. Don't spend your day worrying they sound as though they were overwhelmed by the call. Just prepare yourself where we live you need to be fever free for 24 hours before you can return to school or daycare unless you have proof its from teething. Just a heads up for tomorrow. I would call your boss after the appointment and check in so you can ease your mind. They will probably be over it.

When you go to work tomorrow take the papers from taking the child to the doctor -tell the doc you need a statement for your work. This might help. Make sure you take a copy of it for your records!! If you get fired make sure you show it to unemployment - its proof you did have to take the child to the doctor.

No its not fair. I would have done the same thing. If they fire you or write you up you can contact the EEOC and see if there is anything that can be done. And yea I would try to get unemployment.
Good luck and hope your daughter gets well soon.

1]be shure, you have the doctors statment. that your baby was checked out. make a copy of it. 2]If you get crap from the boss, report it. Your baby comes first. ALWAYS.
The boss probably would have a tuff time replacing you, but don't press your luck.
