pine is a good choice and b & q sell them cheaply unfinished. If you buy one with a varnish or finish on it, you will need to rub it down first for the paint to stick.

Try charity shops for a pine wardrobe, then lightly sand and paint with a satinwood water based paint (emulsion). You can always give it a top coat of semi-mat varnish for extra durability. I've done mine in a french shabby chic style, using gold underneath and a dark cream on top then rubbing back slightly using a fine grade sandpaper on the edges to reveal the gold. Gives a worn lived in look! Looks very nice and expensive, did the same with a pine bed. Just a suggestion!
Hope this helps and good luck.

You can't use matt emulsion unless you want it scratched within seconds, emulsion isn't suitable. You will need a paint that is suitable for wood. Scumble Goosie do lovely furniture ready to paint but are not cheap :(

With any wood I would put on a white primer to start. You will use less emulsion and stop any staining bleeding through from the wood. I would search your local second hand furniture shops.

cities around the world now have www.craigslist.com . Try this for used furniture. In my city in the U.S. at least 4 pages of new listings for furniture are added daily. If craigslist doesn't have much of a following in your area - talk it up. It's great - free listings for the stuff you want to sell also.

Not sure about the paint but if you are in the UK Argos do wardrobes and other bedroom furniture that is 'plain' (not sure how else to describe it!) and ready to be painted or varnished.

beechwood is very strong. you can go to an unpainted furniture store or hit some garage sales and estate sales for the best buys. make sure you clean it well and dry it well so the paint will adhere to it.
my cousin furnished her summer home this way and it came out great.
