Canberra is in the Australian Capital Territory. The place was set up as a capital because of rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne. The agreement that came with federation was that the permanent capital must be at least 100 miles from either Sydney or Melbourne. Since Victoria is relatively small as Australian states go, suitable sites were not found there and the ACT ended up being within New South Wales.

I live in New South Wales and I could literally throw a stone from my house into the ACT.

Canberra is in the Australian Capital Territory which covers Canberra and a significant area of very beautiful National Park to the South and West (mainly). Queanbeyan is a smaller city (30,000 people) in NSW - right next to the ACT that serves as an industrial and commercial link between NSW and the ACT.
