Rotties are bad for this. They are either overweight or under weight. Its hard to find that happy medium. First of all, you need to have his thyroid checked. Its a simple blood test and inexpensive. Its a problem that runs in the breed. Secondly, he is 18months old and you don't want to get him too big or else you may find problems developing with his joints. I have always kept my rottie and bulmastiffs about 5-8lbs underweight until two than I start with heavy protine which the best for dogs is tripe. Go to any butcher and ask for it. Make sure its cooked well. It will bulk up your dog in 6-10wks but be very careful with how much you bulk him up and make sure the vet has ruled out thyroid problems. A high protine diet is needed. Get puppy food. The brand doesn't really matter. I use purina products(not puppy chow, the other and the name escapes me)with excellent results. Feeding him raw meat isn't a really good idea b/c of worms and its not a balance diet to boot.

But please, have his thyroid checked. Its a wide spread problem with these guys. You can feed him all you want but if he has a thyroid problem you'll never fatten him up.

Oh and exercise is also important during this process and LOTS of it.

Good Luck

First did you have him checked by the vet to see if htere is any underlying problem causing him to be thin??
What wormer did you use??
It's best to have a stool sample checked and get wormer from your vet. Teh over counter wormers is very wide wormer and therefore doesn't work very good and often needs to be repeated numerous times.
The dog could possibly have diabetes or thyroid or something else to cause the low weight. I would also have him checked for heartworm as well.
if all chesks out tehn this is what I would do:::::
give him a meal of chicken and rice or pasta as this puts on weight.
The main thing is if he is that skinny he should be fed at least 3 meals a day and should have primarely dry food.
Myself I would give him a pasta or rice meal in the morning and then dry food down all day until about 6 so he can "get rid" of any waist before teh night.
Also mix dry food with the rice and pasta.

OK heres the thing. First take your dog to the Vet make sure that everything else has been tested. ( Worms, Hip problems and or any other problems)

Just before a show I would make my dog's dinner by adding rice ( just white rice ) and dry dog food. For morning feeding I would have made dry dog food and oatmeal.

I would also make sure that he had some sort of activity for at least 30-40 mins, this will build his appetite.

Building weight will take sometime. Don't change his routine ( time of feeding )

I wish you luck .....

oh P.S

Drop a raw egg every other day and this will keep his/her coat with a great shine

The only time you should try to fatten up a dog is if your vet has given him a check-up and decides that he is underweight. The vet can give you an appropriate diet plan suited to your dog. If you follow other people's advice like giving him cottage cheese then you will end up with a FAT unhealthy dog! Extra un-needed weight is not good for people and animals. And like people, some dogs are just naturally slimmer. If you are trying to make your dog look "tough" then just like people he will need exercise. Take him on more walks and he will become muscular. And I am sure he will enjoy more walks! Good luck with him.

Don't as someone has suggested feed liver, it not only acts as a laxative it is too high in vitamin A and not good for dogs in large quantities. Try bulking up his food with cooked rice and/or pasta, make absolutely certain that he is also getting the correct amount of proper dog food for his size, I'm assuming he has been to see the vet and anything medical like pancreatic problems have been ruled out?

**EDIT**
Tripe is also a good thing to feed, but ease up on it when does get to ideal weight as it is quite fatty, but my dogs love it!! once or twice a week.

What I would do, assuming that the dog is not ill, is to feed him the linings of bulls or cows stomachs; Really excellent grub for dogs and they seem to love it! The touble is finding it. If you have a local butcher, he can order some for you from the local slaughterhouse.

Also to give the dog a fabulous coat, give him two large tablespoons full of cod liver oil twice (and no more than twice) a week.

we have had rotties for nearly 15 years now, our latest was also a rescue dog and was 7 months old when we got him, he was, and still is slim at 12 months old,If you have had him checked at the vets and there is no medical problem, bear in mind he wont 'mature' until he is 2 to 3 yrs old, so at 18 months he is still a pup, to build him up slowly and not put strain on the joints is the best way to go, I home cook for mine, lots of fresh mince, either beef or turkey, lots of veg (no onions) and either wholegrain pasta or brown wholgrain rice, once a week he has liver and a couple of times a week a tin of sadines with mixer biscuit(good quality one) He is still on three meals a day to build him up, better 3 smaller meals than 2 large ones and loads of healthy treats, if yours is anything like ours he will be too active to gain a lot of weight, but just wait until he hits maturity, thats usualy when they 'fill out'

I've found raw tripe is the best fattener for dogs, and they love it. Best get vet. advice though to find the underlying cause. But if he's just a poor eater then raw tripe is worth a try, it stinks but it's easily digested and in my experience doesn't give them the runs and puts beef on their bones in just a few days..

have you brought him to the vet and had his hips checked? he might have a medical reason for his rear end being so undeveloped. otherwise, try feeding him 2-3 times a day with LARGE breed puppy food. this will help him develop the mass he should have he should eat puppy food for a while then gradually switch over to an adult food. try mixing some water and tablespoon of canned into it for extra ooomff!
