The vehicle not stopping as the pedal reaches the floor, haven't felt it but it'd be very worrying.

Coming down in gear and using the hand brake would be a good idea, also turning hazard lights on and blasting the horn to tell people to get out of the way, turning the ignition off is a stupid thing to do because that will look the steering wheel preventing you from steering the car away from people (at least on most cars), once it's stopped I'd make sure the hand brake is on tight and get out after the car has stopped and I'm sure it'll stay stopped.

If the brakes had failed because they overheated then just waiting for them to cool down will be effective (although you shouldn't overheat them in the first place, if you have to drive down a long steep hill use the gears to slow down).

First and fore most- I try not to panic. Alert all my senses. Depending on the traffic situation, slow down, change to lowest gear. While doing that indicate proper road signal and come to side of the road. When its safe switch off the ignition and stop in the gear. (If time and trafic permits). Otherwise, slow down as fast as possible, rise the side signals, and stop abruptly in gear. Any way, I never got into this situation since I won't drive fast and without keeping enough distance. So, its a guess!

if the question is correct then I should say, I become afraid. if you want to know how you come to know it? then its when you apply breaks and your vehicle doesn't slow down you would know that. To reduce the chances of accident don't switch off the engine, instead reduce the accelerator and reduce the gears also slowly and use horn extensively. Switching off the engine will reduce the control you have over it.

If it is spongy have them checked. The pedal should be stiff. Low brake fluid could cause this bit if air gets into the lines its big trouble.
