Canada and the US are democracies and Russia is kind of a democracy and it is known that democracies don't fight each other so it'll probably never end up as a war.
Even if Russia does completely screw up and become a dictatorship it'll probably not want to enter into a direct confrontation with the US because the outcome would not be in much doubt.
The US may become a dictatorship but it seems unlikely to happen soon since the fundies are losing power.

As far as the North-West Passage is concerned, all three countries Canada, U.S.A. and Russia have legitimate claims, with Canada controlling the longest stretch.
Nowadays, maritime matters like these are almost always resolved by international treaty, not by conflict. Trade is in everyones interest and not confined to the interests of a few.

If one of the country's can prove that their own country's underwater mountain range passes through there, then that passage is part of that country. Thats why Russia has been so ambition in using some super deep sea diving subs and dropping a flag at the floor bottom. All the countries are trying to collect data that will give its country the proof it needs.
