I have seen krav maga and I was not impressed. I did not find the techniques to be realistic or practical.

Kali is very practical because although they originally use knives, you can also use a stick, which is readily available to you on the ground on any street.

Silat, on the other hand, is a vicious art. It is awesome and very practical. It is my favorite of the non-Chinese/Okinawan arts.

Do a google search for Silat and see what it's like.

Silat Vs Kali

Even the best krav maga teachers just have a few basic techniques and a basic understanding of body mechanics while both kali and silat go into multiple aspects of fighting- footwork, entries, joint locks, standing and ground grappling, pressure points, unique weapons, and on and on. Krap....I mean Krav Maga is a recent conglomeration of basic arts thrown together haphazardly.....silat and kali have been around for at least 1000 years or more.

Here are a few silat and kali clips, you decide-

Also, read around about silat's reputation, why its talked about on various forums, in books, etc.

yeah but whats silat nowadays... some schools will call it silat and have it as something completely different. Silat's been running through my family for almost 1000 years particularly West Java styles and it shames me to see all this watered down silat that teaches kicking above the knees and all this other rubbish.

kali is good and so is silat but the most practical and best self defence is Krav Maga beats anything else. . . yes im talking about board breaking , yelling like a chick with a pine cone up the a** , pyjama wearing , belt showing, barefooted , unrealistic crap.
Krav Maga rocks.

I certainly have some initial impressions from the websites. However, my suggestion to you would be, rather than pick one that we suggest, to ask to try some classes at each: most places will give you a week's worth free. That will give you a better sense of which one lines up with what you actually want, how well you get on with the instructors, and how good their beginner students are. Ask every training partner you get, how long they've been doing it. Notice how good they are, and their attitudes. It will give you a sense of the culture of the school.
