My car has an automatic transmission, are they any benefits of applying the parking brake while parked? I heard it enables your back brakes to last longer if you use your parking brake.

On a steep hill, you should apply the parking brake before shifting the transmission into park. This is so that the brake, rather the transmission, is holding the car, so there is less force on the gears in the transmission, and they last longer.

Also, putting the transmission in park only locks the drive wheels; using the parking brake locks all the wheels. The latter is better. The car is less likely to roll.

The only time not to use the parking brake is if it is going to be so cold that the parking brake might freeze and not be able to be released when you are ready to drive.

Always apply the parking brake when you park a car, the park feature on an automatic transmission should be used as well (if you have a slushbox) but that is an emergency feature if the parking brake fails.

If the car is still it shouldn't make much (if any) difference to brake life.

You should set the parking brake once a week to keep the cables from rusting and seizing up and some cars with rear disc brakes use the parking brake mechanism to adjust the rear brakes which helps stop better but won't make the brakes last longer. Check with a mechanic regarding your make and model. Automatic cars don't generally need the brake applied for parking on level surfaces.

Always use the parking brake with an automatic transmission pecause the parking feature is very delicate. even a small low speed collision when the car is parked without the brake on can lead to very costly transmission repairs.

Using the parking brake will not do anything towards the life of your brakes. It will help if the vehicle is parked and nudged by another car. I always wondered why parking brakes don't seem to have any effect in reverse though. You can back-up with the brake engaged and not notice until you go forward.
