Kendo or kenjitsu is a sport form of Japanese fencing [oversimplified statement]. Tai chi ch'uan is a Chinese martial art that is generally done to relieve stress and to promote health. Most tai chi is considered to be an internal martial art rather than a "hard style" or fighting martial art. Tai chi is generally a non-contact form. Some people liken it to a moving meditation.
If you are a person who needs to relax, wants to remain active as a senior citizen, or wants a good meditative form of a martial art. Tai chi may be for you.
I do both karate and tai chi on alternating days. For me, the tai chi is great for loosening tight muscles. It is almost as good as receiving a professional massage from a certified massage therapist.
Tai chi has benefits in treating arthritis and diabetes, and it has been used internationally to provide treatment and therapy to the elderly. In fact, the Yang-style simplified 24 point form was developed to be a form of exercise for the people.
Tai chi is tied in closely with Traditional Chinese Medicine and the notion of the flow of chi energy through the body and the environment. Tai chi helps minimize "stagnation" in the body and seeks to have the rivers of chi within the body flow effectively.

it really depends what your looking for. One is rather agressive, the other is quite passive. Tai Chi will teach you about energy flow and how the body moves. Its really good if you want stress relief and well being. I think in terms of combat though, Kendo will teach you alot more about openings and striking.

They both have their 'unique' qualities.
Kendo teaches 'spirit' - that is, controlled aggression and fighting passion.
Tai Chi teaches 'active meditation' - Tai Chi is an effective martial art but it emphasizes tranquility.
Both Kendo and Tai Chi Chuan teach 'spirit' but in two different ways.
Kendo is Japanese and emphasizes Japanese spirit; Tai Chi is Chinese and emphasizes Chinese spirit.

They're completely unrelated, save they're both a "dou" style ("way") and intend to lead toward enlightenment. Would you rather carry a sword and invoke Samurai ancestors, or old Chinese monks?

Which ever one is better for you or either both. It's good to have cultivation of internal energy along with great use of swordsmanship (Although I feel that swordsmanship is somewhat outdated for modern times), but hey, go for it man.
