The Greatest combat weapon has always and will always be the mind. Being able to assess your opponent, striking and defending at the right moments, and knowing how to fight are all derived from your ability to think at the exact moment. Without a brain you will lose, even if you have a physical weapon.

If you really want a weapon that guarantees your protection get a gun.

Now, I realize everyone is going to say "It's A cop-out, Picking a gun." But, think for a minute how many weapons can carry and conceal that also deal effective damage? Not many.

The larger weapons (swords, staffs, sectioned-staff, etc...) are not exactly something you would be carry around to any public place (restaurants, movie theaters, grocery store, etc...)

The small weapons (knives, nun chucks, sais, etc...) lack the range, power, and effectiveness of the larger weapons.

Therefor, the handgun is the best choice for true self defense purposes. However, it would be a good idea to get a concealed weapons permit.

The greatest weapon in the modern age is the human body. I know this may sound corny but think for a moment.
Most weapons are illegal to carry. If you actually use them you will most likely be charged with attempted murder.
All weapons must be drawn when attacked, and honestly, who has time to draw a weapon when you are already being attacked.
In the modern age their are no more duels. Fighting is illegal so if you are using your skill it is most likely for self-defense which means you are being attacked by surprise.

The human body is always there, no license or drawing needed to operate.
Learn a fundamental system of self defense with your body before using a weapon. A weapon is just an extension of the body.

anything can be a weapon as long as you know how to use it. the best way for learning self defense with objects is considering what you have in your surroundings. what if you left your sword/staff in another room and someone broke in? you got to use other things to defend right.

as for the greatest, i would think staff because the sword only goes one way as the 3 section staff can come at the opponent one of two ways.

in the order of least to most deadly
gun
rocket launcher
megazord's power sword
nuclear bomb
kamehame ha
chuck norris' roundhouse

in a practical sense knife maybe bo/jo(if there happens to be a stick laying around that resembles a bo staff or if you keep a retractable night stick) training would be more likely to be used in real life.

i dont see people walking around with swords, 3 sectioned staffs, and nunchuckus anymore(and even if you're good with sectioned weapons like nunchuckus they are still kinda risky to use), but if you're just doing it for fun go with whatever weapon you want.

the weapon of choice for most military forces long ago were swords so if you dont care about modern day practicality i'd go with that

This question makes me smile, what young man doesn't have some inkling deep inside them that it is their God given heritage to carry a weapon to defend their honor. Most places its illegal to carry a sword or 3-section staff so keep that in mind. If you are looking at traditional weapons what is most appropriate for the situation in a duel swords are king, against a mounted warrior you might pick spear. For todays world, purely for self-defense, I would learn staff, stick and knife fighting because a broom stick, rolled up magazine and a common kitchen knife are going to be more accessible day to day than the katana you conceal down your pant leg.

neither weapon will help you in the street as it is stupid to think that you could carry a sword or a three sectional staff on a daily basis.

Your best bet would be to find a filipino or indonesian martial arts school and enroll in it, these arts have been proven in street combat all the time.. Oh, that and a M16

This is a dumb question. Why would you want to carry around a sword or staff with you to school, the grocery, the movies, ....or anywhere??

Learn to defend yourself with nothing in your hand before thinking about weapons.

The JO and BO.

Reason being that if you know the techniques for these weapons, you will be able to pick up any stick, pipe, umbrella or similar, to use in the event of an attack.

Truth is, even if you don't know the specific techniques and just do your own thing against an attack, you have a better chance of being able to.

hey buddy. i suggest you take neither of the weapons you mentioned. You're not gonna have a 3-section flail or sword ready on the street. I totally agree with the person who said philipino/indonesian arts. They use weapons like knife and short stick. Staff is helpful also but in my opinion knife and short (rattan) stick is best.
