Linux is not advertised like windows is... that is the main point to look at.. Yes you're right Linux is free and all the software one will ever need is also free.
Within the next year or so Linux will be very popular, now that the computer builders are pre installing versions of Linux.
Yes Linux puts Vista Ultimate to shame

For the same reason people stay with crash-prone windows instead of switching to a max. Windows is easier to use, looks better, widely available, and compatible with most hardware/software on the market.

my roommate in college tried to install linux with that argument in mind and he was so frustrated from the process and disappointed with the results that he reinstalled windows within a month. we just want comps that work well enough, not pets that constantly need attention.

While it is all those things and a bag of chips and a pepsi. Most people just want the damn thing to work and do what they tell it to do. And telling it to do something has to be simple and easy to explain to someone that is not awaiting their Phd in computer Science.
