I'm a group leader for these second graders that I take care of as a part of this afterschool program. If all my kids come, there are 33 of them [yikes!!].

I was just wondering if any of you have any activity ideas that I could use.. I dont want to keep playing Simon Says, Red Light Green Light, Duck Duck Goose, and all the other classics cuz I dont want them to get bored with doing the same things all over again.
So if you guys have any ideas for fun and unique games, I'd greatly appreciate it!!!!

Thanks!

There was a great activity I did one time. Form a circle and hand one of the children a great big ball of yarn. Have that child start a story with just one line (something like there was a girl name sally) then throw the ball (while holding one piece) to another child. This continues as the story does and the kids will form a great big web between them. You can alternate it to answering questions or naming things, but the basic yarn web activivty is a blast and gives each child a chance to speak and be noticed in a low pressure environment. Or try Jeopardy (sp?) type games in groups writing on a chalk board for categories and points. Another good one is called fake out. Give the kids a word they won't know (or some might know) and in groups have them come out with a fake defintions. The group that convinces the class their defintion is real gets a point. Then you can educate them with the real definition. Just a few ideas, but never overlook the value of the classics, more kids should play these now as some are never exposed to them.

The children at ours love the parachute game, do you know it? Children in a circle holding the edges of parachute and you shout the persons name and they have to run from side to the other while the others wave the parachute up and down, or you can buy(hire) big inflatable globes, sort the children into two groups and get them to lay on the floor, then they have to flick the globe using their legs, which ever group can pass the globe from one end to the other first is the winner. Depending on how good they are it can take a while and wear them out. Have fun x x

Tie baloons to their ankles w/ string (you can even have them help you blow them up if they are a bit older and it wont be dangerous) and play music, they have to try to pop other peoples baloons and at the same time keep theirs from being popped. I have used this game for my daughters birthday parties and a few weeks ago when i drove my lil sister back to college over labor day break they had a welcome back party going on they the college students were playing it to so there is no wrong age for this game.

3 legged races or if there is a playground at your facility you could use it as an obstacle course and do races to see who can do all the stuff the fastest. Like use all the equipment going from one to the next the fastest.

The Hokey Pokey is always fun.

I wouldn't worry too much about them getting bored. At that age they are just happy to be doing something that allows them to move around and be with other kids.
