Go to a real camera store and explain your needs and your budget. By real camera store I mean a store that only sells cameras - not 10,001 other things and cameras. The salespeople in a camera store are trained and knowledgeable about every camera they sell. They can answer questions, help solve problems and offer intelligent advice. Some stores even offer an hour or two of hands-on instruction with your new camera. Try getting that on-line or at a discount store.
If your craft pieces are small, take a sample with you. You may need a camera with good close-up capabilities. If one camera does better than another you'll know it.
Reading reviews and getting advice from more experienced photographers is always good. Actually holding the camera and having it explained by someone is much much better. Plus, all cameras "feel" a little different. How it feels in your hands means a lot.
If you do take up a salesperson's time at the camera store, BUY your camera there. Don't "stiff" him/her since most salespeople in specialty stores are on commission. Yes, there are salespeople who only think about the commission and will try to "upsell" you. That's why I mentioned telling the salesperson your budget. If they persist, speak to the manager or owner.

4 to 6 megapixels is sufficient for most users. 3X and 4X optical zoom is the norm. As far as I know they all come with a USB cord to hook up to computer.
Brands to consider are Canon, Sony and Fuji. Look in the $140- to $175- price range.
You'll have to buy a memory card, buy more than you think you may need. Both of my cameras have 2GB. So, I suggest get at least 1 GB.
Check Website dpreview.com for reviews of many cameras and prices.

According to me n ur usage, u should try "Sony Cyber-shot"...
It has a great picture quality, quick USB support, LCD screen of any size u want(many sizes available), n nice battery backup too!..U can view its different models....
U should take a model having mega pixels-5.1 or more n LOOK FOR "CARL-ZEISS" lens (in sony camera)-its the best for digital cameras.....
