i have a more thorough definition.consciousness is awareness of the 3rd dimension through the mind of all living beings, set on different frequency levels for each creature so as not to become part of each others awareness. only in death of the body the awareness goes back to the collective.meaning that we all are one in God consciousness

We are setting quietly at the beach.
1. Feeling
A bug starts crawling on our body. We feel a movement of something on our body. This is the 1st level of consciousness.
2. Awareness - perception
We become aware of this movement and wonder exactly where it is coming from, and realize it is on the leg. This is the 2nd level of consciousness.
3. Intellect
We feel and see that something is crawling on the leg and we want to know what it is, and intellectually decide it is a bug. This is the 3rd level of consciousness.
4. judgment
We then decide if it is harmless or dangerous to a human and should it be disposed of. This is the 4th level of consciousness.
5. Wisdom
If it is dangerous or harmless what should we do with the bug. What is the appropriate method of getting ourself out of harms way. This is the 5th level of consciousness.
There is a 6th & 7th, but we won't go into that.
Consciousness is being aware of our awareness, better known as (self-awareness).
Consciousness is self-awareness .....(Multi-layered)
Elevated levels of consciousness becomes pure self-awareness.
Just my view........

Joseph Campbell had a great example of what 'CONSCIOUSNESS' is all about. You can find it in Nature.
He said that if you observe any flower, say, a SUNFLOWER open up to its full bloom at the start of the day, you will notice that IT FOLLOWS and faces the SUN all day long, until the sun sets in the late afternoon on the western horizon...
That is consciousness.
Peace be with you.

As a nurse I work with the "brain-dead"........yet I always see a consciousness that others may not see, such as in Terri Schiavo. Consciousness doesn't mean the ability to express your needs, but simply being alive, even with no ability to express anything, and hope for the best of humanity. In other words, consciousness falls onto the conscious to protect.

Consciousness is the ability to think about what you are thinking about and deliberately change it.
Subconsciousness or unconsciousness also involves thought, but without the recognition of it or the ability to change it.
Also, consciousness has absolutely nothing to do with the ability to sense your environment.

That one near made me unconscious.
Lol :)
Awakened, or Alert how about informed and knowledgeable.
Caring, or thoughtful there is much to have in consciousness and its those who are unconscious that are not aware.

It is simply being aware of your own thoughts and ideas as well as being aware of what is going on around you.
