I guess I do have a drinking problem, and I don't want to be known as a drunk, especially just being out of high school. Does anyone have tips on getting over cravings? Without support groups or AA or rehab. I don't want to die of liver disease before 40. I don't think I'm going to like being sober... but if I can get past the cravings it'll help me a lot.

Been there done it. Im 34 and still have issues. I go out and cant have just 2, i end up with 15 every night out, 3 times a week. What i did was stop telling everyone im done with drinking, just shut my phone up and avoided social situations that required drinking. Yes there is stuff to do without booze, and yes there will be a time to enjoy a few glasses of wine without worrying. Just cut off the stimuli without having to explain. After 2 weeks all will be good and you will sleep better and feel better. Then start the gym and you will realise all the people who loved to party with you, will call others.
Good luck!

Congrats on your decision.
*Firstly, think vitamins - B, C, A, iron - a good multi-vitamin.
(it will help alot and your immune system is low)
*Find someone to help to you, to chat to, and to distract you from the fact that your not drinking.
*Hire dvds, do art, sport, cook, buy a mag - anything to keep the mind busy. see friends (sober ones!)
*Buy lots of you favorite fizzy drink/juice. it will almost trick the mind. its easier to loose kilos than alcohol.
*It takes a good 3 months to stop feeling so wound up, 6 months to be confident not to pick it up again. So what where and who you associate with. People who are drinking feel convicted by those not drinking, so they will ask you to drink and be persistant about it.
*Put a poster on your door, write down all the reasons for quiting on it. (so you see it everyday)
*Pray.

Be prepared before you start. determination will be the only thing that will get you through it. And remember, one drink is how it starts. a recovering alcoholic doesn't usually look at a beer and think "im going to get plastered", they look at it as just one, that wont hurt, then when thats in the blood stream the next one seems like a better idea.
And be careful not to use anything else as a crutch, ie drugs or cigarettes.

For an extra note, most people who love the drink, in the end thats the only thing they have.

Best wishes.

There is no way to get past this without stopping cold turkey or asking your doc for help. You just took the first step by admitting you have a problem so now it is up to you to decide if you can quit alone or if you need help. Hubby quit many years ago and he had been drinking since he was a teen. He was in his 40's and quit cold turkey so it can be done. You have to have the mindset that you can never have another drink in your lifetime in order to be successful at quiting/.

my aunt died of liver poisoning in her 20's with a husband and child, child without a mother most of his life.....that's what alcohol does, another drunk left a man for dead on the road because of an accident and didn't want to be caught with dwi....alcohol creates problems in life, not solutions

cut back to once a week, then once a month, or till you don't crave drinking (I used to drink daily till I cut back that way-good luck)
