I think it's disgusting to leave the lid of a toilet seat up all the time. If a toilet comes with a lid, it must mean that we're supposed to put it down when it's not in use.

I've never understood why people think it's okay to leave the lid up. Like you're too lazy to lift it or you don't have the time to pick it up...?

If the lid's down, nothing can fall in the water that you don't want in there. If the lid's down, water from the shower can't make the seat wet.

Wow! You've touched a nerve here. Why people leave the lid up on a toilet is beyond my comprehension.

Oh, but thank you for being understanding about putting the seat down!

i figure in general putting the lid down is a good idea for a lot of reasons. to keep pets and small children out, to prevent the unfortunate chance that something may fall in the toilet (i've done this with a cell phone, jewelry, and a hair brush). it's also nice to have the lid down if you live in a house where people abide by the "if it's yellow let it mellow" mode of thought. i don't really care if someone leaves the seat up. i have hands, i can put it down. i can also wash my hands after i'm done. the lid is really no big deal as long as the bowl is clean and free of debris and what have you. i have a 15 month old that i've busted playing with the toilet water before so i have to keep the lid down and request my husband do the same.

edit: dave thinks women walk into bathrooms backwards for some reason.

Hmn....I don't know who invented toilet seat lids. Someone trying to solve the long term male/female issues of seat up or down? I do buy it if you have pet that drinks from or could drown in toilet. I am female and I don't look....landing on a toilet in a home with the seat up could break a hip...and landing on toilet with lid down is not too pleasant either.

If you could buy roses, or take a person out to dinner, tell them that you love them, why would it be so hard to accomodate their seat/lid issues?

Did you ever think about what little things they do each day for you?

I think it is a silly war!

Some people need to have the seat AND lid down to keep pets from drinking out of the toilet. I'm sure there are other reasons for having it down as well. It seems a small thing to do for someone if you care about them. Is it really that difficult?

All of us put the seat AND the lid down in our house. Even if we didn't have small children about, everyone has accidentally dropped something in the toilet while getting dressed before, so we all agreed long ago to eliminate that chance.

First thing to consider is "why is there a lid?"
It is there for sanitary reasons. You are supposed to close it prior to flushing, keeping any little germs from escaping the bowl during the flush. Most of these types of germs die once exposed to the air and cool surfaces of the toilet. However you can carry them away with you on your skin where it is warm enough.
So, everyone please put the seat and lid down. It isn't just a courtesy for the next guy it could also keep you healthier.

Yes some women do - some feel it's unhygienic or the loo looks better with the top down (matching the rest of the bathroom furnishings, say wood). Or they may want to show off their pretty toilet cover for the same reasons. It's called "the women's touch" and its one of those things which make a house into a home.

I look at it as helping each other out.

We guys sometimes use the potty with the seat up and sometimes with the seat down. So we check whenever we use it. Women always need the seat down, so they might not always check.

And sitting down with the seat up can be a major surprise.

It's an easy way to keep the ladies happy. So I don't have a problem doing it.

In my house we have 2 males and 2 females and everytime I use the bathroom I have to make sure to put the seat down because my husband and son are apparently too inconsiderate to put it down for me and my daughter. Nothing pisses me off more than getting up in the middle of the night and sitting IN the toilet.
