The best way is to restore their humility and dignity and get them back in the main stream. Take the help of any voluntary organization for this. Get them a home to live and get the work!!! Dont give money as they become dependent on your alms.

First, greet them. Smile, say hello. Treat them like human beings. Then, find an agency in your town that helps them, like a shelter, and ask them what to do. You may be better off donating your money and time to the shelter than giving it to individuals. However, if you want to give to an individual, offer to take them to lunch and eat with them. They're treated so badly, so often, it is a nice thing for them to sit down and have a meal and actually talk to someone. Many are very nice and smart and you can really learn something. And for those who are judgmental, consider how many people are only a couple of paychecks away from sleeping in their cars.

First we need to find out why they are homeless... Not everyone on the street is on the street for the same reason.
Some need mental health help. Some just need work and a place to stay. Some need medical help. Some are woman and children hiding from abuse. Even some men are on the street because of being in abusive relationships.
Education is the first start in helping.

Find a homeless person and take them out to lunch. Also winter is coming on, if you want buy a coat for one, try to get them to stay in the shelters. alot of Homeless don't want to be in the shelters. Never disrespect them, that will get you no where. Sometimes a warm smile and a cup of coffee just might brighten someones day.

They have the same opportunities you and I have.
You need to realize that all societies have an element of stagnation to them. They choose to live off the success of others. I see it and deal with this first hand. Sure, some have mental issues but thanks to the news media of the late 70s and early 80s we no longer have proper institutions to help deal with these types. They should never have been eliminated, they needed to be dealt with in a different manner. Changed, revamped.
The fact is, the homeless can not be eliminated. Only reduced through higher self-esteem.

I believe by our local governments & neighborhoods & communities working together by providing housing (room & board), along with counselors onstaff to assist them emotionally, psychologically, and even visiting nurses to aid in health issues (ie:medications, well checks...), our local food pantries in providing food to these housing or shelter dwellings where they can reside for a set period of time until (under close supevision) they can be released back into society again. And of course, alittle help with jobs(maybe at minimum wages to start) would definitely help them. I believe many sectors within our communities must work together in order to achieve miraculous results to bring these large numbers (of homeless people) down. So, money can be used to start using older, rehab homes in the cities, to be refurbished just for the homeless, and use the others I've mentioned above to assist in helping these people in true need. :)

Plead to the billionaires and millionaires to build a Marriott for the homeless in each city of the state that they live in. Turn the basement into a unemployment office/ rehab center/ cafeteria/ kitchen and put them to work and send the others out to search for jobs and take up the responsibility of paying room and board.

The most affective way is to implement something that holds them accountable. They just sponge off society to live. I am not saying ALL choose to live like that but the majority do choose it. I would be in favor of a tax hike to implement a plan saying that if you are caught sleeping on the streets more than 2 nights a month you go to jail. It would definitely clear up the urine and throw-up problems. Peace

The Salvation Army does great works for the homeless. And the percentage of the monies collected that go directly to their programs (and not advertising and big cheese's salaries and appearance fees) is astounding. (Upwards of 85%)
Most soup kitchens welcome help year round, though most people only volunteer around the holidays.
There are thousands of ways to "help". Collect and clean blankets, coats, shoes, glasses, they can use nearly anything you can collect.

I think they need to learn life skills. Communication skills, people skills and job skills. You need to give them tools to handle life more effectively. Too often they're just put on psychiatric drugs instead of giving them practical ways to be more in control of their lives.
