Depending on how far you drive, a horse would cost about as much as a car.

First thing, how much is the horse? You've got that cost to consider. Feed will cost you about $2,000/yr. Calling a ferrier probably 2 to 3 times a year for horseshoes (not including shoes that fall off) $300/visit. Annual shots/vet checkups about $5,000/yr. Assuming you already have a barn, upkeep of the barn will be cheap (power and water) $5 a month, probably. Taxes on your land (depending where you live) anywhere from $200/yr to $3,000 (assuming six acres for pasture) and figure in an extra $1,000 for miscellaneous items. You're looking at about $9000 - $13,000 a year for it. Won't really do you good on saving money, since I pay less than that for truck payments, registration, insurance, and fuel.

Not sure about the gas, may be cheap, but the hey will cost you about $80.00 for one of the big round bales, so if a horse eats it in about a week or two, I'd say the horse power might cost ya a little bit more then that tank of gas, and a hitching post is a good place to park, but there again, you would have to buy some sort of diaper for the horse so you don't get a ticket for littering!!
