I came of age down in backward Georgia, in the company of violent, drunken, child- and wife-abusing, brain-dead wackos, primitive Baptist fundmantalists, who were at the door every time the church opened, and they spoke in tongues, handled snakes, fell down on the floor screaming and crying.
From the age of 9 I have been an open atheist.
The ones I like are:
Being slain in the Spirit--
fainting and remaining motionless for several hours,
Laughing in the Spirit -- exhibiting uncontrollable waves of laughter,
Getting roaring drunk in the spirit,
Weeping in the Spirit,
and best of all:
Barking like a dog.
God does work in mysterious ways, eh?

You should listen to Dreamstuff Entity.
On a cautionary note, someone in a Pentecostal church in Africa began speaking in tongues, and the people they were hoping to convert began leaving the church, because what he was saying in tongues was "Worship Satan" in their language. You know, some Christians are like little kids playing with firecrackers. There is a place in the bible where it says: "Grow up already!" (Not in those exact words, but you get the picture)

Makes you wonder why the giant didn't even start his ice cream cone, let alone finish it. And how did it flash-fossilize like that? Answers in areas like this tend to lead to more questions. BTW, I was afraid to click on a link to jimsbigthings. You never know what you're gonna see at a site like that.

Why is this question for atheists only?..
All an atheist is, is someone who doesn't believe in god(s). Speaking in tongues has no relation to not believing in god. Thats like saying most atheists believe in Darwin's evolution.

Speaking in tongues is something that comes naturally. It only happens when you are totally 'caught up' in your meditation. When we are dreaming we utter strange and unintelligible sounds. It is the same thing.

Is there any scientific proof of this? Or is this just speculation based on everyone who is religious claiming that it is true?

You just keep right on drinking that kool-aid, my friend... (although I'm guessing your question is tongue-in-cheek).
