There are different kinds of birth control. Some types actuall make acne worse, but some (Ithink it is orthotrycylene) make it better because it is actually mixed with and anti- biotic.

Dear Cheeks,
I am so sorry that you have battled this for so long with no one to really help you. So many people do the same as you and just can't find relief, but I don't think birth control is the answer either.
You are getting a lot of mixed and wrong information here. I work with dermatologists, medi spa, and plastic surgeons all over the Midwest.
First moisturizers do NOT create more acne. Oil does. In fact really dry skin may cause acne break out because the dry skin clogs healthy pores. That means you have to find a great moisturizer that doesn't have bad poor clogging oil. Some oils like lavender, geranium, palm and avocado actually help calm the inflammation from the acne. You also need a cleanser that gently exfoliates the skin. Caution! Do not think grains of sand or apricot scrub.
Do NOT use Proactive, or any wash/treatment that has an unstable form of benzoyl peroxide. You must find a wash/treatment with stable and time released form of benzoyl peroxide for it to be effective and not burn the skin.
Also there are products that you can take internally that can kill the bacteria that cause acne. These are not prescription based products, so you do not need doc and they do not have the harmful and unpleasant side effects that other prescriptions for acne have. You do not need to go on birth control yet, as this too can have unpleasant side effects.
Also I would hold off on facials, because they are going to recommend a series of them, which may or may not be effective. For the cost you can get quality products at home that WILL help.
If you would like a few product recommendations I would be happy to help you, but need just a little more info.
What are you doing right now for your acne both internal and external?
What treatment creams have you already tried?
How old are you now?
How long have you had acne?
Do others in your family have or did they have acne?
What is your budget for treatments?

Onceienough is not correct. Birth control can help with acne. Most types do, but Yaz is one that is actually indicated to help control acne. Also, Orthtricyclen helps as well as Lo-Ovrall. The last two are much cheaper than Yaz.
It should not cause any hormonal problems later in life, except that if you have taken birth control for several years and them come off of them, it can take several months for a person to conceive if they are trying to become pregnant.
Also.. any birth control pills can raise your blood pressure and increase the risk of stroke while on the medication. Smoking will also increase the risk, for this reason birth control is not recommended for women over 30 that smoke. Since you are only 18 and hopefully do not smoke, there should not be a problem with this.
Good luck!

Yes, birth control is often prescribed for chronic acne. I've been on birth control (Estrostep Fe) for 3 years now. No, the pill will not have an effect on your hormones once you've stopped taking it. I've had problems with acne since 5th grade...I actually went on the pill for its contraceptive use, but it greatly helped clear up my acne - except only on my face. My back acne has not improved. I've also tried products that make my skin peel, but I've finally found what works for me: Phisoderm. Its a brand of liquid face soap that is found in drug stores and grocery stores and is recommended by dermatologists.

My Gynecologist told me that Birth Control pills do help clear acne.
Now, to get rid of your Acne, I did the same as you, I tried over the counter meds, expensive Spa treatments, even pills and they never worked. So, I went to a Dermatologist and problem solved! I saw dramatic results in 3 weeks!
Forget about wasting your money on all these creams and treatments and go see a Dermatologist.

I am on Yaz right now. It is supposed to; Make your cycle more regular Reduce ance Reduce risk of ovarian cysts etc. So far I am NOT pleased with mine. When I first started my Yaz, my period lasted about 6 days, with continued light spotting till about the 12th day. I have significantly more acne than I had before. And I have a Urinary Tract Infection. All of which are on that small print list of side effects. If it doesn't all get better soon I am getting off this crap. I'm hoping my body will get used to it so I dont have to start a whole different type of birth control.

NATURAL ACNE PROTOCOL
1/ Never, ever touch your face.
2/ Use 3 facecloths to wash your face, one to soap on, one to soap off with very hot water, one to rinse off with ice cold water, in that order, once a day.
3/ If you are under 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A once a day with a full meal
4/ If you are over 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A twice a day with a full meal.
Do not get pregnant while taking vitamin A. Do not take any more, like Accutane, it will stop you growing.
5/ Never, ever. pick, squeeze or pop your spot. Read number 1 again.
6/ Do this for 90 days.
7/ Invest in a brand new pillow and 2 new or more pillow cases to double bag' your pillow. HOT wash every couple of days.
Source:
A bit of advice given to me as a teenager, a bit of science as I am studying allergic reactions and vitamin A is a part of that. A bit of research: I sat in a lecture at the back and watched the acne prone pick at their faces, those with the worse acne touched their faces 32 times in an hour, the clearest complexions didn't touch their faces even once. I have circumstantial evidence that acne is the result of dermatophyte transfer from hands to face...where it does not get washed off and is well fed by hormones, sweat a
nd oil...just a hypothesis... But it would explain why vitamin A is so effective as vitamin causes skin to remove dermatophytes.
The secret is never to touch the spots
Tips on how to treat acne and achieve perfect clear skin in as little as 7 days?

It helped keep my skin clear. It helps to level out your bodies hormones. After I quit taking my Birth Control my breast shrank and my skin got worse and my moods were awful. The tanning bed also helped with my acne. If you haven't tried it yet and its not going to be to much on you wallet try cliniques skin care line.
I was taking Ortho tricyclen Lo. I haven't taken BC in a year now and I'm about to start taking it again. A lower dose then the one I was taken before. I'm so nervous about starting over on my BCP but hey if I get my period the same time every month I'll do anything LOL
