I'm a 18 year old male and I'll be turning 19 this November. I haven't signed up for the draft yet and I'm wondering what to do. One website I read said that I'm legally required to register no later then 29 days after I turn 18. Well, I'm way past that deadline.
What (if any) are the penalties for not registering?

You're signing up for Selective Services. . .

Go ahead and sign up for it and I highly doubt anything will happen. Males in their 30's have yet to sign up.

First of all, there is no draft. You would be registering with the Selective Service. It has been around for quit a few years. In all that time not one name has been drawn to be "drafted". Second, you are required by law to register. I'm sure there are others who can give you the whole list of penalties that you may incur as a result of your failure to do so. Better get down to your local Post Office and fill our your card. Don't sweat it.

Congratualtions! You have just admitted to being a law breaker! It IS a law for ALL MALES WHO TURN 18 to register with the Selective Service Admnistration. There are many problems you might run into if you're not registered.
I suggest you get off your hind parts, go to this web site and REGISTER NOW. You CAN do it on line.
Click on the FAST FACTS section, too. Interesting!

You are required, by law, to register with the US Selective Service System. If your name is on the database? You are registered for the draft.

Go into the website and check your registration using the link provided (your social security number is all you need).

You need to register especially if you are going to college and want student loans. There can be a stiff penalty and a immediate demand for payment if you have received loans and aren't registered. Yes, Fafsa does conduct spot checks and can, via the IRS, garnish your pay and any refunds you may have to recover the loan and fine. It's really not worth it for something that is not going to happen anyway.

Although you're late, I've never heard of anyone being hauled off to jail for not registering, even though every male must at 18. Just go ahead and do it so you won't have to worry about it any longer.

x
Failure to register or otherwise comply with the Military Selective Service Act is upon conviction, punishable by a fine of up to $250,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both. In addition, federal and certain state laws require registration as a prerequisite for obtaining student financial aid, job training, government employment, and U.S. naturalization.

In most places, you sign up for selective services when you register to vote..so get in there and do it! Not only is it the law to register for selective services, but there is a presidential election coming up...you need to be able to make your choice heard!
