My spouse has recently been in the hospital for a couple of months now. We have three children and I am the only one working at the moment. I live in Texas and am in need of TANF and food stamps, maybe even welfare. I work a lot and am unable to visit these offices in person so my only other choise is to either mail in an application for approval, or to do it online. Is there a way for me to submit an application online? If I have to mail in the application, would I be able to receive benefits without having to visit the office location? Is there any information or thoughts you might have that might help me regarding assistance with clothing, food, paying bills, etc. Please answer nicely, no rude comments about my situation or anything about shoulda, coulda, woulda....Looking for help. Thank you and God bless.

You could ask the social worker at the hospital if they know of a way you can get help without having to take time out of work. Also, they may have someone who you can give the authority to apply in your behalf, like an advocate or an ombudsman.

Try this site to help you apply online: http://www.wtxfoodbank.org/profile.asp

Even if you don't live in West TX they can most likely get you in touch with an organization in your area.

In California, you have to go in the welfare office and fill out the paperwork then talk to a worker. She asks for certain documentation too.
I am sorry that this is happening to your family. If your wife has a long recovery process and cannot work for a year or more she may be able to receive social security benefits.
Best wishes to you and your family.

There are nonprofit organizations that will help you apply for government benefits, and these are often open on evenings and weekends. Check with a local church or your United Way to find the names of some agencies. They will need your driver's license, and although they can make a copy, I suspect you're still going to need to apply in person. The government is trying to avoid people who are trying to commit fraud. However, the nonprofits can advise you about the best times to go. In Ohio, there is no way to apply for these benefits in absencia. You might have to take a day off work to get it done. Good luck.
