It could be so many things, or nothing at all. Open mouth breathing is done when a dog is warm, offer him water. Winces? From what, touch? Does his tummy seem swollen or hard to the touch??? If so, it very well could be bloat, and that is serious and could result in death if not dealt with asap by a Vet. Check his gums. Pink, is great. Grey or white, you have a serious problem requiring a Vet. Check his temperature as well. To put your own mind at ease you should have him looked at as soon as you can.

That being said, I have one other suggestion. Go to a good book store and pick up a book on first aid and common health concerns in dogs. Put together a little kit for first aid; actually they sell these at pet stores. Become informed and ready to handle minor emergencies should they arise. You will also learn what a real emergency is; and how to deal with it until you can reach the Vet. Being informed and ready will give you peace of mind. Good luck.

The dog displays all signs of being near heat exhaustion.
Offer fresh cold water-not ice water. What's the temperature
like where you live? If this is not heat related then something
is wrong and you should see a Vet as soon as passable.
Hope that helps and good luck.

Scoop him up and take him to the vet. Something is wrong, and we cannot diagnose for you nor help.

sounds lethargic. i would take your dog to a vet. Are your dogs gums pale pink?

I read in a book that pale pink gums is from kidney failure. It your dog cold-wrap up your dog so its heat can stay in its body until you can take it to a vet or emercency vet.
