I just got a new Panasonic TH-50PX75U Plasma screen tv. My HDMI cables are coming later in the week, so i hooked it up to an hdtv cable box with a coaxial cable. (Is this bad?)

For some reason, I have horizontal bars across the top and bottom of almost all channels. This means the HD channels that broadcast non-hd programming are framed in black, since they include pillar boxes on the side.

Is this because of the coaxial cable? Or is this a different problem?

PRESS the FORMAT button or the ASPECT button on your remote control.....

Set it to FULL or STANDARD.

If you press it again and again, it will CYCLE thru all your choices...normally gives you 4 choices.

I think you are seeing old content (4:3 Ratio, Square) being broad casted on a digital channel.

Non-HD programming will appear like that. Most people just stretch the picture out so that it will fill the screen.

The HDMI and Component cables are made for HD content to be displayed correctly. If you have an HD Cable box with an HDMI out, you will get a alot better picture using the HDMI cable.

Its not ''bad'' to hook it up like that, its just your not optimizing the picture quality available.

It should come with some component cables (red, green, blue) for digital video information and (red, white) for audio information. That will probably get you by until HDMI cables come in.

a) Coax out of an HDTV set-top box could be bad. (I think it only sends SD signals). I recommend using component cables until your HDMI comes. If you don't have true-component cables, just use any RCA cables you have around (you will need 5; 3 for video and 2 for audio).

b) Configure your set-top box for a 16:9 TV (it may still be setup for a 4:3 TV)

c) Use the aspect button on your remote to change the aspect ration on your TV. Your set-top box remote may also have an aspect/format button as well.

Oh expensive. that's no ask your self that your plasma is having themes. they have been customary to be not as solid as an liquid crystal exhibit exhibit. yet Panasonic has consistently made good TVs. verify your guarantee & discover your receipt to work out if an substitute is a threat. there is little or no to repair in those TVs. the cost of certainly doing a fix could exceed only changing it.
