I am not a Buddhist, but I can spell it.

I have two friends who are Buddhists, both are very nice people. They traveled to the far east, lived and studied there for almost a decade. Neither of them claim to be "monks."

After a quick e-mail exchange, they inform me that you do not need to do anything to become a Buddhist. In fact, they suggested that, "If you see Buddha on the road, kill him!"

They said, "If you really want to understand, you will eventually figure out what that means."

They refused to explain any further and told me to give you that message just as it is.

Peace...

Taking Refuge in the Buddha is a confident acceptance of the fact that one can become fully enlightened and perfected just as the Buddha was.

Taking Refuge in the Dhamma means understanding the Four Noble Truths and basing one's life on the Noble Eightfold Path.

Taking Refuge in the Sangha means looking for support, inspiration and guidance from all who walk the Noble Eightfold Path. Doing this one becomes a Buddhist and thus takes the first step on the path towards Nirvana.

Buddhism is a wonderful philosophy. Is there a sangha in your area? Before deciding to become a monk, you should learn to meditate, and spend some time with others on that path.

Wanting to become a monk without a deep understanding of the path tells me perhaps you are just looking to escape from something.

They would probably appreciate it if you could spell "Buddhist" properly.

Why not?
I think they let you change your mind if you don't like it.
