Basically the short styles means less time grooming and are for the yorkie owner who loves everything about the yorkie but the grooming chores.
This is called a puppy cut. You trim the cut into short layers all over. You can get a professional to do it for you.

There is also the schnauzer cut , all of the coat is trimed short on the torso and left longer on the legs then the facial hair is trimmed into the traditional schnauzer mustache.

There is also the westie cut which is similar to the schnauzer cut except the hair around the head and face is trimmed so that it frames it.

It's all personal preference..we had a teacup yorkie, super tiny named peanut....we never ever let her hair grow out long she was a family pet and her hair would of needed constant grooming. We took her to the doggie groomers and got it trimmed up short all over, face was trimmed short with slight little bit above eyes and around her muzzle. It grew in again but it was easy to maintain and she felt great having no hair weighing her down. I don't have any pics, she has been gone for a long time passed away of old age...but use a puppy pic as what you want done, that is what peanuts hair was like and the facial hair looked like puppies when they are young.

I have 2 Yorkies. One is 11 yrs old and the "baby" is 3 yrs old. And I keep both their hair short. Unless they are show dogs there is no reason to keep it long. It gets too many tangles when long. I give the baby a scissor cut myself. I sit her on the kitchen table on a towel and just like they cut my hair, comb it up and cut it off. I keep her head just alittle longer so her bow will stay in place. The 11 yr old I use clippers and take it down to about an inch. I used to take her to the groomers, but she has bad legs now and I worry they might hurt her. Sorry I don't have photos. I keep their beards short too and trim their ears even with the ear line. I bathe them about once a week using baby shampoo and nice smelling hair conditioner. She smell so good.

Ask your groomer for a 'puppy cut'. A good groomer will know what you mean. I have a Lhaso/cross and I usually need to have it done twice per year.
