I am a beginning film studies student, and I would like to start making my own films. I've thought about getting a digital movie camera, but I don't like how cheap and unprofessional the picture quality looks. I want to find a camera where it has good quality pixels and an option to manually focus it so I can focus on one object/person if desired. Any suggestions? Also, what is the best software for a beginning film maker?? Thanx

Not only on manual focus, but many more. For example control manually on iris, white balance, ISO, shutter speed. For example to film under bright sunlight you must adjust ISO, iris and speed. The combination of them will correct exposure setting to produce superb colour as required. Canon XL2 is the best choice, where lens are exchangeable by using special lens adaptor

the best equipment for any film maker, beginning or not, is to rent. at least try out the model you think will work. unless you are pumping out 20 or so movies a year, it does not make economic sense to throw money at studio gear.
