I have a badly chipped, dead tooth and limited funds for a root canal, so I have been putting it off.

I say it is "dead" because there is no pain.

A few hours ago, it started to throb a little, so I checked my gum in the mirror and saw a pointing abscess. I put my finger on it to see how hard it was, and it burst with a small amount of bleeding.

Now, I know I have to see the dentist, but I am concerned more about the infection than the tooth. Since the abscess has drained, do I need to see the dentist tomorrow? Or can I wait till the end of the month when my check comes in?

You need to see a dentist as soon as possible, before they can do a root canal (assuming that one is possible) you will need to be on a course of antibiotics. If you start the meds then you will be ready for the root canal when your cheque comes in.

A draining abscess will give you really bad breath.

Ignoring an infection anywhere in your body can lead to septicemia (blood poisoning) which ultimately can lead to death. Get it fixed.

You definately have to go to the Dentist, in the meantime get some Antibiotics to kill off the infection, just because the absess has drained doesn't mean all the infection is gone, and you definately don't want the infection to travel to other parts of your body. I am dental Assistant and we had a patient once that had an absess in his mouth - he did not have it treated straight away and the infection ended up in his testicles. Ouch!. Also if it isn't a front tooth then you might want to think about taking the tooth out if you don't want to spend the money on Root Canal. I personally would opt for the root canal, most dentists these days will let you pay it off if you leave a deposit. Loosing a tooth can be bad for appearance, speech and the bite. With that I mean your chewing and things to do with that.

no. you need to see a dentist. you are right to be worried about the abscess. you need antibiotics because you can end up with spesis and die. this is what dentists call a "dental emergency".

Yes,
It's the calm before the storm. Might be next week might be next year but its coming and the sooner you get it fixed the better.

If you get in early you might get away with a course of tablets.

Trust me on this. I would'nt wish the pain thats coming on anyone.

SEE A DENTIST YESTERDAY. AN ABSCESS, EVEN IF IT HAS DRAINED, IS A TICKING TIME BOMB.
