I read Humble Pie recently and found it was a real eye opener.
I don't make a point of watching his tv shows, but did catch a couple of them and thought it was really funny that he called all his turkeys other chefs names like nigella and jamie!!
I don't love him or hate him.
People don't realise that he must be great to work for as he has had heaps of loyal staff stay with him for years.
You can't afford to be nice and say "I think that tastes a little salty so lets start again, you're doing really well" when you have starving people waiting for the meal they have ordered. Just think about how you feel as a customer if you are served inferior food!!
If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen!!!

I love Ramsey! I'm more a fan of Kitchen Nightmares than The F Word... I can't wait for the American one he is coming out with in the fall! (Though it won't be the same with all the bleeping).
Ramsey takes very good care of himself (a former footballer) and he didn't grow up in a cushy burb either. I respect the fact that he can be cool, but doesn't take guff. Do your best and don't try to BS him... That's all he asks for.
Plus, he's a devoted family man (as much as a busy man can be), what's more important than that?

There is no doubt that Ramsay is a very talented cook, but his histrionics, swearing and general angst annoy me intensely. If I were making pesto with him, he'd soon be pining for his nuts!
It is difficult to attract young chefs to the restaurant trade with its low pay and unsocial hours, especialliy as there are secure jobs with regular hours in institutional catering and with food-service providers such as Brakes and 3663. Uncouth head cghefs simply put young cooks off.
I'm not jealous of Ramsay - I can cook French Haute Cuisine and invent my own dishes and innovate - for example, I use tamarind in Italian-style cooking, and I base a lot of my dishes on a root of onion, fennel seeds and fenugreek, but if I had to do service every night under a Head Chef, I'd rather work with Brian Turner or Antony Worral-Thompson than the big G.

Is it really necessary to swear at low paid kitchen staff?
In moments of stress, there might be a bit of shouting, but then, in a well organised kitchen there shouldn't be that level of stress.
Don't hate him, never met him. If people are still willing to work for him and accept the abuse and other people are still willing to eat at his restaurants then that's their choice.

I like and admire his talents as a chef, I think he has worked his way up from nothing and I like that in him, I don't think the shouting and abuse is necessary though, there are many fine chefs out there that run kitchens without the swearing.

In answer to "Poppy" - Mr. Ramsay wouldn't allow you to work for him, you would never stand the pace..........!
Set aside the swearing. HE IS THE BEST.
AND THE VERY TOP OF HIS LEAGUE. I bet you wouldn't mind being a 1 pound coin behind him...........but could YOU work as hard as his standards ? I doubt that very much.........DONE.

I love him. I think he can be quite rude, but then he's just being himself. I think he is a great chef, obviously very passionate about what he does. It's great to see someone love what they do.

Think he's brill - all chefs are a tad short tempered, especially when under pressure.
