Happened by accident. I was shopping for the ingredients for my chili in the grocery store one day and I tripped. I fell into a potato bin and got confused....the person next to me was frying donuts and I accidental dropped the potatoes that got caught in my pockets into his vat. He was a nice french guy and said "let's split 'em". So..there you have it...we made french fries.

And so we arrive at your question. For additionally interior the 1840s, pomme frites ("fried potatoes") first regarded in Paris. regrettably, we do not know the call of the inventive chef who first sliced the potato into long slender products and fried them. yet they have been in the present day customary, and have been offered on the streets of Paris by push-cart distributors. Frites unfold to u.s. the place they have been referred to as French fried potatoes. You asked how they have been given their call--especially obvious, i might say: they got here from France, and that they have got been fried potatoes, so as that they have got been referred to as "French fried potatoes." The call grow to be shortened to "french fries" interior the Nineteen Thirties. by the way, the verb "to french" in cooking has come to advise to shrink in long, slender strips, and a few human beings insist that "french fries" come from that factor era. whether, the French fried potato grow to be commonly used because of the fact the middle 1800s, on a similar time as the OED cites the 1st use of the verb "to french" around 1895, so it looks especially convincing that "french fried potatoes" got here earlier the verb "frenching." The commencing place of the call is for this reason the country of commencing place French and not the cooking term french.
