I don't go to church. I just stopped when I realised that people were there to watch what other women were wearing or how this guy has put on so much weight etc... I talk to God all the time, asking, thanking, sharing the good and the bad with him. It may sound bizarre, but it makes me feel closer to him, as I would be with a friend. Try, it may work for you too.

Well, I'd suggest that you answered your own question. If you want to get closer to God, becoming active in a church is a good first step!
Prayer is also a good way to get closer to God. My church is doing a series on prayer right now...next week's message is subtitled "How to get connected". The pastor has an awesome ability to teach (not preach) and he always offers practical tips. If you're interested, we have two online services...email me through my profile if you'd like more information about service times.

1) Attending church on Sunday does not necessarily make you closer to God.
2) You can still believe (and be close to God) without ever stepping into a church.
3) Religion is a personal thing. What works for me will not work for you. You can't rush it.
4) You should talk to a religious leader about your questions. He/she will probably give you better advice than any of us will.
Good luck!

Church is a hard thing for me too. I don't really trust people because for the most part, they suck. I am getting better about it. - Talk with him everyday, all the time. Like he is there beside you. Know that he is. That tickles his heart to be invited into your life, and actually gets to stay. Be kind to everyone you can. Don't get fooled, but do what you can for others whenever you can. It won't be everytime. It can't be. Pray for discernment so you know which occasions you should step up and which ones, you let go. Church is important for fellowshipping but not as important as including Jesus in your everday life. Remember, it is the small things he wants. Eventually, small things lead to bigger things. He wants you be have character and integrity first and foremost. From there, a solid foundation is laid. God bless.

The bible is God's word. To hear Him, you have to read and study His word. You can also hear and learn more in church and Sunday school. Involve yourself in activities with other Christians. Pray for a closer relationship with Him. And, do everything you can to help your fellow man. It will all work out. God bless you.

First off, you're going to let Him know. Think of it this way, He is your ultimate Father. Does a loving father want to hear from you now and then? Yes and the more you visit, the closer you get.
Most definitely you need to be reading the Word. Get closer to Him and He will guide you.
And as hokey as it sounds, you need church. Not just any old church but a bible believing, loving church group. Real people. You need the fellowship.

Ask for prayers from everyone you know who is faithful!
Also it could be your church! Some churchs are boring, I have been to many churchs until I found one that Brings me closer to god every week! I have now been at this church for 5 years! Try using god and incorperating god into a daily basis! Do an annual prayer before you eat, and before bed! I wish I could help you more :(
Hope this helps!

like you, i've never been very active in church. the one thing i did do a few years ago was join a bible study group. there were no preachings of any kind. just a group of people reading and discussing the bible. you might want to find something like that in your community. since i've moved away from home, i haven't been to a bible study in a while but i now have a relationship with God. i just talk to him. i don't feel the need to belong in a church although i know a lot may disagree with me but that's just the way i've chosen to live and i'm happy with it.

Just sit in a quiet place and 'talk to God' as if he was your best friend. You don't need to 'say it out loud' but it does help while you are getting used to 'praying' in this way ... just 'be quiet' and do it where people can't see you talking (they may think you are insane) ... and after awhile, you will KNOW that God is always LISTENING to you, even when you don't 'feel him' ... get a copy of the poem 'Footprints' ... it's about Jesus, but it's the same sort of thing ... and that might help you get closer to God.

you don't have to attend church to be closer to God, you can become closer to him however you want, whether it is attending church more often, reading the bible or even just leading the most moral life that you can
