Do you have pictures of your loved ones? Have you ever looked at the picture of someone while talking on the phone to them?

Statues and pictures of people we love are not idols.

Statues and paintings of Jesus and the saints are just like pictures of the people we love and respect.

The King James Version of the Bible states in Exodus 20:4: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth"

Why were the Jews commanded not to make graven images? Graven images were the standard method of pagan worship. They were representations of false gods.

This is a very clear command.

However God commanded the Jews in Exodus 25:18 and 1 Chronicles 28:18–19, "And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them"

And in 1 Kings chapter 7 Solomon made bulls and other images out of precious metals.

It seems obvious that the Jews did not worship the cherubims and Solomon did not worship the bulls he had made. These images did not violate the command of God. Therefore, an image not made for worship is acceptable.

In Numbers 21:8-9, "And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover." Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he recovered."

And in John 3:14-15, Jesus says in correlation, "And just as Moses lifted up the [image of a] serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."

How can a statue of our Lord Jesus Christ dead on the cross be considered an idol to a false god? A crucifix is the message of the Gospel without words held up for all to see, a visual reminder of the sacrifice of Jesus, no different from a painting, a play, or a movie.

Catholics do not worship statues but the almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

With love in Christ.

How do you know what an "idol" is? Did you find a dictionary tucked away in the back of Leveticus or something? Do you realize that the Jews venerated and bowed down before two carved cherubim on the Ark, two huge golden cherubim in the Temple, and gold-worked Seraphim in the veil of the Temple? The outer veil of the Temple was adorned with the images of the Zodiac, and the walls of the Holy Place were covered with images of Paradise. Early Jewish synagogues were covered with icons of the saints, from floor to ceiling, and typically had an image of Metatron (as Helios) on the floor, encircled by the images of the Zodiac.

So it is that I wonder where you get your definition of "idol." It certainly is not the definition employed by either the Jews or the early Church...

Your main problem is that you don't understand the difference between an idol and an icon.

An idol is worshipped as if it were God. An icon is used to remind us of the true God.

Also if you are against crosses and statues being used you must also believe that God sinned when he told the Israelited to create the Ark of the covenant with statues of Angels either side. Also when he told them to look to the bronze serpent.

Short answer Catholics and other Christians do not worship crosses or statues, they use them as a reminder of the sacrifice of Christ.

How is wearing the cross worshiping it? It's not. Catholics and Protestants both wear the cross, or keep it near, as a reminder of God's love. Some also hold a superstitious belief that it will protect them. That doesn't make it an idol or a subject of worship.

First--have you ever heard of SPELL CHECK?? Or do you really believe your spelling is OK?

Catholics do not worship false idols, we worship the One, Triune God.

Last time I checked, most Christian ecclesial communities had crosses in their sanctuaries.

Catholics use the Cross/Crucifix as part of our worship because it drives home for us exactly what God was willing to endure to offer us eternal life. It is an object that helps us focus our worship on God.

Better than the new agers and their rocks!

What's wrong with that? A sin? Every religion has it's own way of doing things. There's nothing wrong with idol worshiping. No, Catholics are not the only religion to do this.

Its idolism. Thats part of the Catholic Sect, to represent the father, son and holy ghost. They use rosaries for different things, and thats just the way it is. It really don't matter for me. I was born in a catholic/protestant family, and I've questioned the religion ever since I could ask "Why" This still counts that I am a Catholic. Just because I'm an agnostic, doesn't meant that I have no knowledge about the religion.

All Christians worship a man (Jesus). A human, a carpenter, a person who had brothers and sisters and cousins, who hanged out with fishermen. What's that if not idolatry? And besides, you can thank the divinely inspired and infallible Catholic bishops for making your bible. I think the Muslims are right about Christians.

To be an idol, it must be worshipped.

The use of the crucifix is exactly the same as having a photo of your mother -- not that you love the photo the same as your mother, but that it reminds you of how you love the real one.
