Problem is, it is out ofm y area of specialty. (I am a therapist). I completed a master's degree to specialize in clinical services, yet my company doesn't have anything available except this administrative position.
Then last week, before my promotion negotiations were completed, I was offered an interview with a new organization that would pay a tad bit more than the new salary and would allow me to do the work I studied 6 years for. I took the interview and it went great, and expect a job offer this week. My question is, how would I then go back and tell my company that not only do I not want the promotion but I am leaving? I feel loyalty to my current company and the job is GREAT, but it's not really what I want to do.
One last thing is a lot of people assisted in me getting this offer, and I don't have the heart to disappoint them. I'm torn on this, so any suggestions are welcomed.

I think you know the answer, you're just afraid to make it (and being a therapist, I bet you know you're right). You might think that this is an issue of loyalty but really, it's fear...probably of the unknown. Do what you would advice a client: make the decision that you feel would be best for you and be sure to thank the people on both sides who've been helpful. Remember that any decision made out of fear is the wrong decision so if you stay or go because you're afraid of "they" will say, it's the wrong decision. Finally, remember that as much as you all might feel 'like family', the day it's not feasible or convenient for them to have you, they will lay you off. They might agonize, and write a message like the one that you're now writing, but they'll still let you go. Someone recently said in a seminar that it is our "duty" to be who we were meant to be. If you spent all this time studying for something you love, and now you have the opportunity to pursue it, you are far more blessed than most. Think about that. Good luck!

Well, why did you take the interview anyway? If you were happy with the big raise and benefits then what is the prob? Wanna use the knowledge that you studied hard to put under your belt? Look, life's too short to have regrets so you better do what you feel you would be best at and enjoy more, salarys aside. And if you piss off a few people in the process that sucks but they will get over it. That is way better then spending the next several years kicking yourself in the bum because you made the best decision for OTHER people, not yourself.

Yes you will feel badly after so many persons were instrumental in getting you your present job. And yes, anywhere you work, you should have a sense of loyalty. Having said all this, as stated, you studied 6 years in your chosen field of study, because you loved it and feel sure you will be in a position to help humanity. Go for it. If you do not enjoy what you are doing, you wont be able to give it your best even if it seems you are.

Good luck.

Life is to short to worry about making these people upset over a giant life change for you. If you dont like that job as well as you could this other and its what you want to do I say go for it. Or take the new job, tell the old job you re going on a 2 week vaction and see if you like it better. Bottom line is its your life and you should be happy.

You have to do what's best for you in the long term. Where will you be happiest? What position will allow you to use skills and interests that you want to be using ten years from now?
