Can anyone please share some information about how the military handles people that have hernias? For example are they discharged because it could be reaccuring?

They repair the hernia. After an appropriate period of convalescence the patient is returned to full duty.

I guess it would depend on the severity. But a few years in the military told me that for the most part, the military's position on injuries or other health issues is to look for the quickest fix possible to get that person back on duty as fast as they can.

A guy hurts his knee badly on course, the #1 concern is to placate him and get him back to what he needs to do. Something might be torn? Oh well, X-rays are expensive and why worry now when you can pump him full of painkillers, send him on his way and then let it be his problem later when the real damage sets in.

I don't think though that there is any solid policy on the hernia in particular. If it's a first time occurance, then appropriate measures would be taken. It isn't something that warrents an automatic discharge.

They repair the hernia. If it is a recurring condition, the service member is discharged accordingly. Likewise, if the hernia is irreparable, the service member is discharged.

desertviking_00 is a good source, since he was a doctor and really knows.

I had one in Navy boot camp in 1968. They repaired it, kept me in the hospital for a few weeks, and then returned me to another company. I eventually graduated and retired as a Chief after 22 years service.
