dating a best friends ex, your thoughts?

Question

my best friend and her ex dating for 9 months and broke up about a year ago.
now her ex is pursueing me (sp?) i explained to him that her friendship means the world to me
now recently she wont pick up my calls, she wont respond to my messages, but she doesnt even know whats going on
i love her to death and i know she has a right to be mad at me even though im not even dating him but for just thinking about it,
but the other day her ex told me that its unattractive of me to bring her into our relationship, and im conflicted with what he said
bc isnt she all ready being brought into this relationship from the beginning..?
what our your thoughts? is he giving me an ultimatum?
