Hey guys. Just got my bike stolen. Nice ride, too. Now I'm a pedestrian again.
Now I'd like to believe it was stolen by another bike lover who'll enjoy it and all the additions I've put into it, but I know it's probably some low-life who'll sell it for $40 to buy some drugs.

Sorry if I sound bitter. Just bear with me. It's therapeutic. What should happen to these people in your opinion? Feel free to be graphic.

They should be tied to a rigid bike sans-saddle and forced to go down a rocky downhill section.

I think there should be a pretty stiff penalty. The value of the bike should be accounted for with additions/upgrades and that should be the value of the theft, so jail time seems a must. Also, def the bike should be returned if the person is caught.

On a similar but different note relating to this... I've seen a lot of ads on Craigslist, at least in Seattle, for people who have had their bikes stolen, trying to get the word out. Yesterday, there was a thank you from a guy whose bike had been recovered thanks to people mentioning that they'd seen it in Ballard and he was able to track it down and get it back. He didn't say what happened to the thief, but did mention taking pictures of your own bike and having serial numbers. I know that police say that recovery of theft items such as this is really rare, but the bike community often seems to stick together well and may be able to help you out if they can! Try posting an ad on Craigslist if you live in an area that has a Craigslist region!

Punish them to the fullest extent of the law.

lol, okay maybe not that much, but I think there needs to be stronger laws concerning theft. I read somewhere that this is a crime that is committed more times than any other. Maybe because there are some kind of problems in the law system concerning this. Or something isn't right if there are a huge percentage of people stealing things. In most cases you can't do anything about it because the theif goes unnoticed. So unless you plan to wired your house with the latest in theft security or micro chip your valuables, it's going to be hard to punish someone here if you don't know where he/she is at.

Of course my idea of punishment would be first...

return the item or if is unable to return it, they should be able to get an exact item with all add-ons included, etc. Or give the same monetary value of this item.

second, heavy fines for phsycological damages or time you spent off work or anything else you did to try to recover the item. that is, for example, posted lost ads or made billboards and would like to have that money refunded.

last, minimum 5 years - 35years in prison. depending on the gravity. Or parole, but would agree to have a microchip implanted during that time.

Very good question!!! They should be TORTURED ( i.e. wrap a rusted chain on their necks and fill their stomachs with 3 gallons of castor oil and tie bike cables to their member with acid dripping.....then let them be slammed with riser bars from baseball hitters!) Bro....I had a bike stolen when I was buying some grocery stuff in a cheap drug store when some dillweed ran off my bike----I chased the bunghole and fell on mud , wounded, and the thief disappeared! It was tragic!!! Now after 4 years, I bought a USA made hardtail and LOCK IT when I leave it----Anyway---bikes with LOW bid prices are found on EBAY (www.ebay.com) in Sporting goods category ( Mountain Bikes & Parts)---you'll find a bargain ( sell your porn collection, playstation 3 or jewelry! )---it will take time, but I hope you find a great deal!

Amputation, of his genitals, via chainsaw. No need to elaborate however you will need to take pictures and post them at all bike stands in the city to prevent further attempts.
A day without a bike is like a day without sunshine. I am sorry for your loss (A moment of silence in rememberance was just observed)
