Don't tell me it's science. It isn't science.

Don't tell me it's logic, because you are in denial.

Just admit that I'm right, it's a faith issue, you have faith that you are right.

Zap, thanks for proving my denial charge correct. Have you ever looked up the word, or any word, in your life?

Using Merriam-Webster's definition, then yes I have "faith" that I am right. The word faith derived from the Latin fides, or to trust. I trust that I am right. The first (most common) definition is that faith is loyalty, fidelity to one's promises and sincerity of intentions.

So yes, I have "faith" that there is no god.

Christians do not own the word "faith" and belief in god is not the only, nor the most common, definition.

It is logic to "deny" what has never been proven and doesn't make sense. Any belief can be belittled, for instance, you believe "god did it" while athiests believe "it was an explosion" but you have to take a deeper look into either theory, by the way at least physicists admit it's a theory. While christians lay back with their book and really have nothing but that atheists/physicsts are constantly growing learning coming up with new ideas. Face it, both sides seem rediculous to the other so why ask a dumb question just to try to get a shot off at the other side, isn't this kind of thing against your beliefs? oh and that " Just admit that I'm right, it's a faith issue, you have faith you're right" That's your ego screaming about how great and wise you think you are. Face this, you have a holier than thou complex.

To be in denial about something means that the "something" has to either be self-evident (I have a heart because I'm alive and typing this), or backed by measurable, testable, repeatable evidence (I have a heart because it shows up on every MRI scan.)

I could claim that I am a magical being that is able to live without a heart, and despite the fact that I appear to be a normal human being, if I never let anyone get near me to check, there might be a few nutjobs dumb enough to believe I don't have a heart.

I could claim that there is a magical being that made the universe, everything in it, and spends all his time observing the affairs of the 6 billion people on this planet. There might be a few nutjobs dumb enought to believe this as well, since there's no way for anyone to check out my claim.

So if that isn't a logical argument against god, tell me what it is?

EDIT:
Faith is belief in the absence of evidence, so one could argue that people who don't believe in a god do so on faith, but evidence of absence is not absence of evidence. Non belief in god is no different from the unlimited number of other things that I don't believe in, which I don't even know until I question myself. For example, I've never, until this second, thought about whether I believe their are little cartoon characters running around my house, hiding pieces of food under the couch. I'm fairly sure there aren't, and I really have no proof there aren't, but to say I have "faith" in this belief is simply ridiculous. The entire concept is whimsical fabrication.

To me, your god is exactly the same, and I don't devote time to internally reinforcing my belief in this. Gods are ridiculous concepts, not worthy of active dismissal, and that's all there is to it.

Atheists don't need faith because they are only concerned about what we know and what we see. Their beliefs are based on fact. Religious people cannot prove their beliefs with fact, so they must have faith. One could argue that facts are based on a "faith" in science - but that's a whole other philosophical issue. I think at some point we have to accept what's real and whats not based on our understanding of life as human beings. I am not an atheist by the way.

2007-09-18 16:27:42 · answer #4 · answered by David 4 · 0 0

Atheists have faith in their own morality. So Do Agnostics. With either one, the bible and religion is not important. Just living a good life. You think all of these non-believers hare evil-doers, when they are only just people who question the book because, there are a few things that sound like people on LSD wrote. Its not a faith issue, its just an issue of how ignorant you wish to be, and how arrogant you can sound. This is why we can't have nice things anymore. Because people who believe like you in a general sense are stupid to think that badmouthing someone for their belief will convert them. Follow the golden rule, kid.

Lol, a faith issue? There is no evidence for gods.

I lack faith in the supernatural. I think, reasonably speaking about what we empirically know about human psychology and the natural processes like evolution, that gods are not likely to exist, just as faeries and Santa Claus is not likely to exist,

You lack faith in faeries, I presume. Does that mean you have faith?

I say you're wrong.

-blink-

O.o

Wait...-blink- What?

I don't get it. Your wording is really weird. Lemme see if I get what you're saying: You want us atheists to say we have faith that we're right?

Huh. Well, see the thing is: I don't believe I'm always right. And especially on the topic of religion, I don't like to tell people they're wrong.

I'm with Samurai Jack on this one. You're playing with words here. Having "faith" in a god is not the same as having "faith" you're right. Also, keep that attitude in check, pls honey.

I don't believe there is a god or any of that other stuff. If you want to call that faith, go for it. -shrugs- It doesn't really matter to me what you wanna call it. (Spoiled your little victory party there, eh?)

Just as much as Christians have faith that they are right about there being no Quetzalcoatl.

Christians can't tell me it's science. It isn't.

Christians can't tell me it's logic. They're in denial.

You'll have to admit that I'M right, that it's a faith issue, that you have faith that you're right about Quetzalcoatl not existing.

But you're wrong... and by not believing, you're condemning yourself to Mictlan, the lowest of the 9 underworlds. Tsk tsk... it's just too bad. But there's still time, you could still save yourself. Accept Quetzalcoatl as your god and your creator and you will earn yourself entrance into Middle Heaven.

So... are you afraid? Or does all of this sound like total nonsense? And are you TOTALLY missing the parallel to your ridiculous mythology? And are you LOUDLY denying that you have faith in Quetzalcoatl's nonexistence? Or will you say that you have faith just so that your own argument isn't decimated?

*edit* What, you believe in the "concept" of Quetzalcoatl? Not good enough. You have to believe in the REAL Quetzalcoatl, the god, the creator, your savior. You have to follow his wisdom if you value his truth and his love and the life he's given to you. If you don't follow his wisdom, you're condemning yourself to Mictlan... but I've already told you this. It's all up to you from this point. Either save yourself or condemn yourself. OR... do you have faith that all of what I just said is bullsh*t?

I'm fairly certain that I'm right, but definitely not 100% sure that I KNOW I'm right. Nor can you be sure that you are right.

The thing is, I don't deny a god's existence. I just lack belief in said deity's existence. Show me some decent evidence for such a God or gods, and maybe I'll change my mind.

Until then, at least try to learn the definition of "atheism." Also, don't tell us what we do and do not believe. I'm sure we know that much better than you do.

2007-09-18 16:23:28 · answer #9 · answered by Redac 3 · 3 0

Hmm, so eager to prove that it's all about faith. Is it because you know that no religion can be defended in the end? That blind faith is the ONLY thing you can use to cling to a flawed system of belief? If you have to do it, then we do too?

Despite what you desperately want to think, atheism is about logic, and it is about science. And yes, it is about faith in logic and science... because logic and science have earned faith.

Religion is about blind faith. Faith that is not earned. In other words, wishful thinking.
