The "red rock" is Uluru, which used to be called Ayers Rock, in the Northern Territory. It is a huge outcrop in the desert which turns dark red in the setting sun. It is sacred to the local Aboriginal peoples and attracts thousands of tourists every year. The Aboriginal people prefer visitors NOT to climb it. They also guide visitors around it, explain its sacred significance, and show people the beautiful rock paintings in the caves.

Ayres Rock (Uluru) has a lot of history and significance to the aboriginal people. It is also a great tourist stopover. A major point that not to many people know is that it is over 100 times bigger below the surface so the rock we can see is only a minute part of this wonder of the world.

Uluru, or formally known as Ayres Rock, holds special spiritual significance to the Aboriginal people especially to the Anangu Aboriginal tribe on which the government handed back their land and Uluru in 1985.
Because of the spiritual significance they won't even climb the rock, although it is open for tourists, they do ask that they don't climb out of respect.
My partner’s family are part of that tribe.

T-Mann the pink soil from what I even have examine is volcanic, hundreds of thousands of years previous. It does have a magnitude with the Aboriginal people, in case you have ever long gone into the interior or bush, and sat at a camp hearth with an elder who spoke with regard to the dream time. the floor, the air, and water is a significant significant component to their subculture, the pink soil shows the spirits previous.

The old name for Uluru was Ayers Rock. The name is often misspelt "Ayres rock" from confusion with Lake Eyre.
