That almost entirely depends on "why" he is your ex. If you are a teenager then I would suggest someone new because there will be many more over the years and you'll need different experiences while young to have a serious, long term relationship in the future.
If you are older and experienced and do indeed love this person then just flirt and hint at the fact that you are "looking" and available. Unless the breakup was a bad one then you won't have to work very hard to pick up where you stopped. That is, of course, if he still feels for you. Letting someone know that you miss them, their touch, kiss, laugh, smile, eyes or whatever can open a door to see how they feel without coming out and saying you want them and making yourself vulnerable to being used. Just chit chat like friends... usually if their is affection left between ex's it will show in conversation if not an actual kiss.
