Paul tells us that the New Covenant is based on "better promises"(Heb.8:6) - promise of God (Jeremiah 31:31-34) and people's acceptance of it by faith.
The Old Covenant was based on people's (Israelites') faulty promise -"All that the Lord has spoken we will do" (Ex.19:8)
In addition to the Ten Commandment Law God also gave them various Civil and Ceremonial Laws pertaining to every sphere of life. The Israelites, while tenaciously following the latter laws, repeatedly broke the Ten Commandments. Through Hosea the Lord said to the morally corrupt "inhabitants of the land": "For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. But they like men have transgressed the covenant." Hosea 6:6, 7.
The people were not able to live up to their promise of keeping the Law. Through this exercise it was made clear that man was unable to save himself by trying to keep the Law. The broken Law demanded the sinner's life. He was in need of grace. It is at this point that Christ's role as a sacrifice in place of the sinner becomes obvious by Him "becoming sin". Once the demand of the Law is met, grace can be offered to those who accept the sacrifice of Christ. By accepting Jesus the sinner affirms to God that he wants to be true to the Law just as Jesus was(John 15:10). It is then that the Law of God can be said to be written in the believer's heart. This is the substance of the New Covenant.

The New Covenant was fulfilled in the death of Christ. The Old Covenant was a type. It was a shadow of things to come. We no longer need to sacrifice animals. We all can look to Jesus the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.
John 3:16
Romans 10:9
Hebrews 8:10
1 John 1:9
Revelation 3:20
Have faith dear friends in God.

Christians say the Jews were so bad that God had to start over. Something like the story of Noah's flood. Jews don't believe that God ever reneges on His promises!
Some Christians say Jesus fulfilled the old covenant. Some Christians say that the New Testatment supersedes the Old Testament. "Supersedes" means that some items are removed and replaced with updated items.
For Nina: Animal sacrifices were never obligatory in all cases. Since the destruction of the 2nd Temple, sacrifices have been replaced by prayer.
Ross says: "We evolved from people distant from God to those who could understand the subtleties of the laws of the Sermon on the mount and that God lives in us." ROTFL
Still waiting for the terms of that "new" testament!

The descendents of Abraham would be his chosen people and place them under his risk-free practices. He does no longer say they are going to be greater proper basically they shall exist as a seperate and distict entity and be His people. How that's to be delivered approximately isn't revealed. God at tis time stipulates basically one commanment, and makes basically one promise. The commandment is that one and all men of His chosen people would desire to be circumcised on the 8th day after start, or,if switched over into the religion, then circumcised upon conversion. The promise is the land of Canaan.

God saw that humans were totally unable to keep all of the Mosaic laws. The new covenant is through Jesus Christ. God sent Him to pay the price for all the sins that the entire world has ever committed, and will ever committ. He took all that shame on himself on the cross. He was a once and for all sacrifice for our sins. What great LOVE!

apparently God is fickle according to Christianity.
When he says a covenant is eternal and forever binding he really dose not mean that.
What I dont get is if Christians believe that God could change an eternal covenant what makes them so sure he did not change his mind about the whole Jesus saving thing?

Because we cannot make it by law without the animal sacrifices. I am glad He loves us so much that He came to free us from trying to make it to heaven thru works.
