my teacher told me to make wider margins on my typed essays, does that mean more white space on the sides or less white space on the sides

You should be able to changes your margins in the word program that you have.

Use more space before your sentence. I think the rule in typing is 10 spaces. then to put a margin in your paragraph you use 5 spaces before the first sentence.
