I agree strongly with the previous answers: Your dog should never be intentionally allowed outside unattended. He or she should be in a secure area (ie: fenced yard or dog pen) or on a leash when outside. Always. This is for your dog's safety, and is your responsibility. A loose dog can become injured or killed, cause an accident, learn to run with other dogs, etc..(What if your dog takes off across a street to chase a squirrel, cat, etc.?) Not to mention, that at least everywhere I've ever lived there are leash laws, and it is illegal for a dog to be allowed to roam off leash, and in many places to be walked off leash with his/her owner.

Don't do it. An unattend is sure to result in an unhappy ending.

Why be an irresponsible pet owner? Your dog could be injured by another dog, hit by a car or pick up diseases from other animals.
Leash your dog, take him for a walk. Good exercise for both of you.

You surrender him to a shelter! He will then be helped to find his way home! To a new caring home with a responsible dog owner!

If he's lucky he'll end up at the animal shelter and be adopted by a wonderful, caring family.
If he's unlucky he'll get lost, starve on the streets, get nabbed by people who sell dogs to laboratories, be euthanized at the shelter because no one wants him, be used to teach pit bulls how to attack other dogs, get mauled by a bear, fall in a mine shaft, get caught in a hunter's trap, get tortured by bored kids... or maybe he'll just get hit by a car and end his suffering quickly (but don't count on the fact that he'll die or that it will be cheap to put him back together).

Take him on regular walks around the neighborhood on a leash. If he gets lost he should be able to find his way home.
