New legislation may be coming into effect soon that will make the cost of general aviation so high that almost no one will be able to earn a pilots license or do anything related to general aviation. As I skydiver this is very concerning to me. My sport is having a hard time getting new members because of costs. This bill would not only make skydiving much more expensive but it would make all other general aviation activities very expensive as well.

The gist of the new legislation would be to decrease the amount of money the government spends on aviation and put the cost for aviation on the public. This is for all aviation! Not just general, your plane ticket to see grandma at the holidays will be going up too.

What do you think about this issue?

I'm biased. I don't wait to have the costs go up anymore and keep me on the ground.

Please look at this site for more information about the issue:

I feel that everyone should be concerned about this issue. Travelers may not see an increase in ticket prices, they may actually see a decrease, but in coming years they would begin to feel the effects of this bill. That is because with GA having to pay more, it will be cost prohibitive to learn to fly. This will exacerbate an already bad situation in that fewer people are learning to fly. With fewer pilots, there will be fewer and fuller flights. This will make the travel nightmare even worse than it already is.

This is a typical airline management short-sighted reaction to a problem that needs a long term fix.

Actually, The major air carriers are lobbying to get the costs that they have to pay reduced and even out among the GA. This would mean that all costs would be lower for commercial travelers, but you are right, GA would be a lot more expensive! I am not concerned about the issue either way, but I think it is sad that the GA community will have to incur the costs that the major carriers have floated all this time.
