No way. They should just use execution instead of life imprisonment. And for minor crimes they should use whippings or canings instead of prison (or maybe in addition to prison, but a shorter sentence). Prisons are extremely expensive, and most evidence suggests that they do not work very well. Most prisoners return to prison within a few years of being released. And while they're in prison they just learn to be more effective criminals from the other inmates. And they can even become stronger because most prisons have weights for them to lift! Tell me that isn't a stupid idea!

And before you say that execution and corporal punishment are inhumane, keep in mind that prisons aren't all that humane either with all the rape and violence that occurs in prison.

It costs more to guard a work detail than to lock them up. On average, you would need 4 to 5 times the amount of guards, plus transportation and equipment.

However, telemarketing jobs wouldn't be a bad idea. They could do it from the prison. Of course...who in the world would want MORE telemarketers....?

It's okay to spend my tax dollars until they've been through their appeals, but then they should get capital punishment...put them out of our misery and let us save some money to spend on the rest of them coming up through the ranks. Yes, I believe in the death penalty.
